This is a great scroll through. I am very impressed with this aspect of collecting. I don't know if I could see a photo and quickly associate it with any card. So I impressed that people made some of the connections, especially tight crops or tilts.

I do not own this photo (not sure if that's a requirement for this thread), but thought this was a good match.

Thought I would bring this one back to the front page. I found this 1936 Billy Herman photo shot in Catalina during spring training. I knew that I had come across this image before but could not narrow it down. I discovered today that the photo was used in two of the Wheaties series. It was first used in 1936 and then reversed and used once again the following year in the 1937 series.

Mike, I've got to say, I continue to be impressed by your keen eye and/or memory in connecting the dots to make all the matches you have. Keep up the good work!

Beautiful photos!
I own this 1915 type 1 photo: http://www.baberuthautographs.com/ph...-sox-team.html Must have been taken within minutes of another photo that produced this image: http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/...n/2012/14.html What do people think the general photos should be worth value wise? Obviously the photos came before the cards and are much more rare..... Keep me coming....any Mantle's out there? Great thread. |
T222 Fatima Leach
Just noticed I have this one. It's interesting (to me) that they created the Fatima Leach photographic image directly from the negative, but modified the background. I once spent an afternoon in a friend's darkroom, watching him manipulate one of my black and white negatives to enhance various aspects, but never change the actual background like this.

I am bumping this nice thread because I had recently bought a photo of Cochrane that I thought was great early image. Couldn't get much earlier without going into his PCL days. I recently found that the image was used on a couple of cards. Both are not off the main path, but still cards using the image.

I also posted this in the November pickups a few days ago. Apologies to those who may have already seen it there.
Obviously not a Pre-War card, but this image of Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron at Yankee Stadium during the 1957 World Series was used for the 1958 Topps card number 418 - "World Series Batting Foes" The International News Photos stamp on the back didn't come out well in the scan, so I'm not showing it here, but it is the one used from 1949 - 1957, according to "A Portrait of Baseball Photography" http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps17b1782f.jpg http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps61b124b5.jpg |

....I saw this beautiful Burke 4 x 6 and thought " wow that's the picture that Wheaties used to create their 1934 Gold Medal Foods Premium of Odell Hale so I purchased it , as any nerd would do , and when it came I dug out my card and saw right away that the uniforms and location were not even close. On the bright side , it's a gorgeous bright clean Burke 4 x 6 of Odell Hale in a great pose. |
Glad you like it in spite of the faulty memory :) If you have a keen eye, you can pick out a great many of the Goudey issues of the mid-1930's that feature Burke's images and pick up the corresponding photos relatively cheap.

Man, what a terrific thread!
Turned out I was acquiring stolen goods when I won this studio portrait of Christy Mathewson by the photographer Benjamin Falk circa 1904. The image appears on numerous Matty cards such as 1915 Cracker Jack and M116 Sporting Life. The photo now resides at the Hall of Fame. Special shout out to Bill and Doug. Thanks guys! Haven't taken receipt yet of the Carl Horner cabinet of Joe Wood which I won from Christie's but it's paid for so I guess it's mine. Am trusting that its provenance is on the up-an-up. It begat a coveted Sporting Life card and an awesome Kreindler painting. |

Leon, You Punk!
Sheesh Leon, I FINALLY get released after 9 months in the hospital, and my first day back on Net54 you post a photo of my main man Lou Gehrig? Cool fricking photo, man.
And I actually own the 1936 Joe DiMaggio photo (a George Burke 1936 postcard)! |
Quote:
So glad you are out now. I was going to come see you again very soon. WE need to go to lunch soon and catch up. BTW this thread, and the first post, was started around 6 yrs ago. It's been many years since I owned that Gehrig photo.... |
This is the original art for the Exhibit card:
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20Art%201.jpg |
Oops! No idea why the 2011 post pulled up as the current one for me. But here are some not-so-great photos of the DiMaggio I have. Wish it was Gehrig, but it is a pretty incredible Yankees item regardless.
Yes, Leon, i *definitely* want to get back together soon. I will likely be living temporarily in a Rockwall location in about a week. For everyone else, I will soon post a story about the incredible and horrible 2017 I have had. Right now, I am finally "free" of hospitals, but holy cow, the final (#26) chemo treatment seemed great (not one single issue during the treatment or 7 days after), but then it suddenly crushed me. Currently, I am in so much pain I am more than ready if God decides to bring me to heaven anytime! Also, there were two different 1936 DiMaggio Rookie Cards, so here is the "Pastel" rookie as well... http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/j...c/P7260055.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/j...c/P7260056.jpg http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/j...s/P7260057.jpg |
