Default Unusual T206 Back Image, What is it?

Posted By: Tom

Hi,

Have seen people identify some pretty obscure looking stamps and images from the period (laxative ads, cigar logos, etc.) and was wondering if anyone had any idea as to what this is on the back of this T206? Does the use of multiple colors imply it actually went through some sort of print run or could it still have been a rubber stamp or something? The borders of the image look to be a similar size to the card which is interesting.

Thoughts?

Ghost print or not, it seems to be a depiction commemorating an historic hot air balloon flight in 1843.

From http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/balloonhoax.html.

[linked image]

This may give us a lead, if only because the balloon is described as "ellipsoidal," and 1843 is the date of hoax. (And the hoaxer was Edgar Allen Poe!) Obviously the images aren't identical, but it may be someone else's rendition of the same event. Also notable is that, at the end of the 19th century, balloon cards were, um, on the rise among collectors. Perhaps what started out as a perfectly normal hot air balloon card ended up being perverted on the back of something later called a T206.

Neat card!

Bob

Most old and new rubber stamps are just one color.

I would imagine the guys in the non=sport forums would be better able to tell us what is on the back of this card.

Maybe it was there before the Piedmont was added?

I agree with Bobby, post in on the non-sports pages.
It looks like one of "their" happy.gif type of issues.

I posted it on the non-sports side. We'll see what they say. Looks aviation themed to me.

Since it's not a T28 Aeroplane or E40 Airships, this could be difficult. Maybe a trade card.

It's the famous (and seldom seen) Zeppelin Underprint!

Maybe they printed the non-sport and baseball cards in the same room, on the same presses... blasphemy....

I saw this card on ebay a couple weeks ago in that live auction that had the Wagner for sale.

That's a really nice lot of cards you got.

edited: Unless you bought the card from the person who won the lot.

Either way, the lot this was in was a nice grouping of cards.

Default Unusual T206 Back Image, What is it?

hello,

i have been gazing at the image, at first, appeared to be a "stamp", but the multi colors i'de say no...i 've seen other back prints of other origins(the bitter lash backs) for example on some t206, but ultra rare...

its printed over the peidmont as i can see, but almost looks vibrant as a roll on tatto a kid would wear(not saying it is of course)....

some mosiac design, but the basket or carrage matches the vibrant colors of the background on the t background...could the printer have had similar patterns for color print layout??

i personally would like to see the card....my guess would be a commerative era post card if it was done at the factory....looks factory cut and prob would grade..

just my 2 cents

johnny
