Find Honus Wagner

I have this 1890's Cabinet Card from Patterson NJ and it MAY include some of the greatest ball players from the 1800 and 1900's. IF you could spot any of these players or any other players, it would be greatly appreciated.

Mike Kelly (about 30 years old)
James Mccormick (About 30 years old)
Edward Sylvester Nolan (About 30 years old)
Honus Wagner (About 15-20 years old)

This is a picture of a town team, and there are no famous players. An important team would not likely pose in such a manner.

I agree with Barry. It is unlikely that a famous person would be in this photo (such as Kelly), but this photo was taken was before Honus would have been playing major organized baseball. This photo was taken in Patterson NJ where Honus grew up and I must say that the person on the bottom row second to the left has a strong resemblance.

I don't know if its Honus or not. But i do know we have had alot of threads about photos of ball players that we think resemble a famous player and then we agree it's not them. So maybe this is finally the one. Also where did you buy the photo from, local auction, ebay, flea market?

How do we even know this is a team and not just some locals posing with baseball bats? I'm not a photo collector but I have seen countless photos of "ordinary" everyday non-ball players with balls, bats and equiptment in the photo.

I saw this item posted on ebay and asked the seller where it was taken. She said Patterson NJ and it wasn't on the listing. I knew of the links of Patterson NJ and great ball players and I bought it. I found another photo (not mine) taken about 3-7 years later of an organized patterson team. Here is the photo.

The resemblance is weak...maybe it's Obama looking for a photo op?...thinly veiled political comment...but then again, what is that guy doing in the trees? Usually found after they have been cut.

What Jay said. Wagner was from Mansfield, PA. To make it more confusing, there were two Mansfields in PA back then. The one which still exists is in north central PA (an hour or so north of Williamsport). The Mansfield of Honus fame was later renamed Carnegie, I believe. And, without double-checking, I think that Wagner spent his entire life living there.

Are we even sure that picture is fron Paterson? There is no indication on the photo. The original owner keeps using two "t"s, when there is only one. Plus, even in the early 1900s, Paterson was a large mill city... silk mills to be exact. I don't know where in Paterson there would be a park that beautiful, maybe Garrett Mountain?, and I grew up 10 minutes away in Lyndhurst.

My experience with photo ID is that if there are enough faces to choose from (and in the image at hand there are over 40 individuals) you can almost always find at least one face that bears enough of a resemblence to the person you are comparing it to to give you hope you found your match. Complicating matters further is that we are human. So try as we might, we cannot extinguish all subconscious biases in making our assessments. When I am making purchasing decisions about whether a particular person is in an image, I always require at least one other corroborating factor be present. For example, did the image come from the family of the person you hope is in the image? Is there a positive ID of another player who was known to have been on the same team? Is the photo process (e.g., albumen) consistent with the period the image is to date from? Etc., etc. Without this corroborating evidence, I would characterize as de minimus the probability that the image depicts the person you are looking for.

Always remember that there was someone in your high school who somewhat resembled a celebrity. As Corey points out, if you look at enough antique faces, there is bound to be someone who somewhat resembles someone.
