Default what would you OVERPAY for right now?

Posted By: Dave F

Most of us are always wanting a deal. What card or cards out there right now would you OVERPAY for? For me, I'd have to think I'd throw the kitchen sink at a Darby Chocolate or Texas Tommy...although in reality I probably wouldn't have enough to even underpay for them.

A 1910 Obak Miller (San Francisco). And I'll have to...grumble...grumble

Probably a N321 Hess California League, too. I'm currently trying to spread a rumor that the N321 Levy in Scott and Leon's auction was actually a gentile, so that a few of the specialty niche collectors will lose interest.

I really need an E98 Chase Red. You could pretty much name your price. If the person who outbid me a couple of weeks ago on ebay wants to sell lmk. Otherwise I need an E98 Chase Red.

Thanks Robert,

Yes, I am down to the last Cocoa that I need for completing the set that I've been concentrating on the past couple of years.

http://www.sgccardregistry.com/set.aspx?cat=1&set=667&userset=1540

Couldn't have gotten nearly this close without the help of a few board members not the least of which is Peter Thomas who is also working on the set but graciously traded me a couple of the cards that I needed.

I have told others what I would be willing to pay for a Cameo Pepsin Pin of Louis Sockalexis and it would easily set the record for the highest price ever paid for any pin from this set, maybe even double it. I know one changed hands last year for about half what I would pay. I just need to find out who has one of the 3-4 known copies out there so I can make them happy.

As Ralph Lauren noted back in 1977 (the year we began
collecting ultra high grade rare baseball cards)

Quality never goes out of style.

We do not believe that one can "overpay" for an item which
provides as much joy and happiness as an ultra high grade
rare baseball type card.

Who needs girl friends, wives and party buddies when one
can obtain those very special pieces of near mint to mint
cardboard? They don't talk back, demand nothing more
than their SGC or PSA cases and only are seen when one
wants to see them.

You don't have to pay for their bad habits, watch them get
old and/or out of shape (a PSA 9 is forever), and if you take
proper care, insurance costs are nominal.

We continue to chase after the penultimate examples of Texas Tommy's,
N-162s, Monos and a number of others. In the interim, we can think
of nothing, or for that matter anyone, whose company we enjoy as
much as that of our ultra high grade cardboard collection

To link it to my English major, I say "overpay" is a misnomer.

Go to our website to find out what we have. For myself, 1933 Tattoo Orbit Dale Alexander and Jimmie Foxx please?

it's kind of impossible to "overpay" for a Boston Garter, since they are so rare...but if anyone is willing to try...see the BST (shameless plug).

James, I took a look at the upcoming H&S auction -lot number 848 Jimmy Foxx pin and postcard - the postcard is not from the 1940's, it is from the late 1970s and is a Jim Rowe postcard. He used Burke and Brace negatives to make postcards and he made thousands of them...you almost always see them with the name of the player in block letters on the back.

Two things I really want and would be forced to jump at.

Any 1914 or 1915 signed Cracker Jack.

A Boston Store Joe Jackson in lower grade prefer a nice good or so.

James G

Looking for 1915 Cracker Jacks and 1909-11 American Caramel E90-1.

On rare occasion I can tend to put in a hefty bid right there on the spot.

For example - in the REA auction, well before closing day - I put in a maximum bid. The auction ended with my winning the lot below my max bid amount. You would have to say, technically, that I overbid. (1925 Exhibit Babe Ruth PSA 5, highest ever graded)

And on ebay, once in a blue moon I bid big early, and end up winning the item below my bid amount. Again case in point where one has overbid.

Agree with prior post - high end, ultra rare, major HOFers are oh so nice. You know, the ones you show your non-collector friends, and even they are eyebrow raising impressed!

But he beat me to it.

Joseph, that's darn funny and also beat me to it.

Damn work getting in the way of my card time...

I don't overpay for anything; I pay the market prices of the future. Yeah, that's the ticket!

I'd be a very strong buyer for any card autographed by my cousin. Got a 1951 Ringside recently, still need the Exhibit card and the E211 York Caramel (riighhtt, like I'm gonna find a signed one of those...).
