They should have lost both games. Why were they a 2 seed?

Because they were the #3 team in the country and in first place in the ACC until the last regular season game. And then reality hit and everyone noticed that they have no inside presence.

I wonder if any of the players were feeling sick today? Coach K had a 104 temperature this morning.

Gerald Henderson is terrific. But the rest of the team is sub-par for Duke.

Dan, I don't know about the players but as an alum I can tell you that whatever sickness they had they must be very contagious -- they made me sick right through the TV screen!

Jeff- you know they should have lost last night too. That lob pass at the end was perhaps the worst inbounds pass I have ever seen.

Because the media loves Duke and the Acc. Put a "Utah" on the front of their jerseys and they would have been a 5 seed. It's sickening. Clemson and Duke were way overrated. I hope Arkansas pulls the big upset tomorrow against NC. Letting NC play the first round games in Raleigh and then getting to stay in North Carolina for the next rounds is an absolute crock. Memphis is getting ready to have to go to Houston and probably face Texas and the Tigers are a #1 seed too.

I coached John Scheyer in middle school, as well as his coach, Chris Collins. Both are great kids, and I feel badly they lost. It would be good to see nice things happening to nice people. Their loss did mess up my brackets, however.

How is your bracket going today Josh? I noticed yesterday you were on the front page of the national leaderboard...ranked #25. That's pretty amazing when you consider there are a million or so entries.

Jeff,

Scheyer may be a nice guy but he lacks the quickness to succeed as a guard on the D1 level.

He can shoot the open j but he certainly cannot create his own shots like JJ Redick did and his defense is horrendous.

With Nelson graduating next year, the only high quality returnee is Henderson. Paulus is an average D1 point guard and Singler was a huge disappointment the last several games.

I am still doing great. i should be doing well because i spend hours capping games of all sports. I bet on sports for every day of the year. I capped this years tournament for 18 hours. Last year I won 25 k and I only invested 9 hours of capping!

Jim, I disagree with you on Scheyer. He actually drives more effectively than Redick ever did and has been one of the best sixth men in the country this year. I suspect if he had gone to a different school, say Illinois, he'd be averaging about 18 a game. That being said, I don't think you're winning an NC with Jon Scheyer as your starting 2. Henderson is their best player but until Duke lands a quality power forward, i.e., Brand, Boozer, etc., next year ends much like the past few have.

Bob,

No chance our Hawgs win tomorrow against UNC. If it's a close game, we'll get screwed by the refs. I really love the future of Arkansas basketball though and can see us in the Final Four again very soon with Pelphrey. As for Duke, they were overrated the entire year. Coach K is in a quandry as he can't recruit NBA quality players anymore as they use the program and leave the cupboard dry after a couple of years. Nevertheless, it's always good to see the despondent faces of the entitled rich kids at Duke when they fail in March.

Apologies for Duke fans as my last post seemed mean. My bracket got butchered for the first round but I DID call the upset of the tournament so far....Siena over Vanderbilt. I figured if my Hawgs could beat Vandy twice, they couldn't be that good

James, I'm sure if you had studied harder Duke might have accepted you. No need to show jealousy. Plus I'm not sure that the kids that play for Duke are necessarily rich kids; they're the same kids that get recruited by the other top programs in the country. Do they become rich and entitled only after they sign with Duke?

As for Duke players leaving early for the NBA, I wasn't aware this was a Duke-centric problem. But Duke must be doing something right because their players are making more money in the NBA than any other college program this year.

In addition, Duke went 4-2 against top 20 teams this year including beating UNC at UNC. I guess the media was to blame for those wins, too.

I am a huge Duke fan and probably saw 15 games this year.

I have been a fan ever since I used to go to Duke and recruit MBAs and they would give me tickets for the games. One time I bought my son and it left a lasting impression on him. He even apologized to me for picking Dartmouth over Duke as he had such a strong attachment there.

It's an incredible school and seeing a game in Cameron is probably the best sports experience one can have--and I've been to every sporting event possible including the World Series sitting in the first row.

Jim, you can forgive your son but only if he tells you the one Duke player who transferred to Dartmouth.

Jeff,

I had already hired one Duke undergrad so I asked her to give my son a tour of Duke while I was interviewing the day after the game and she said all he could talk about was Duke basketball--where does Grant Hill hang out, who is his roommate etc etc etc. For next two years after seeing game he called me his Duke "bro"(brother)and made me a birthday card about Duke basketball. Nothing hass ever had anywhere near the impression on him and he played varsity squash at college, 20-25 junior golf tournaments and has been to many different sporting events.

I don't know off the top of my head who transferred to Dartmouth. Must have been many years ago.

Jim, of course it was Crawford Palmer! He transferred after the first championship in 91; somehow he figured he had no shot of supplanting Laettner as the focal point of the team.

My apologies to the Dukies also. They completely destroyed my bracket. I had picked them to play in the final against North Carolina (losing, of course). My friendly disdain comes from years of playing the neighborhood Blue Devils in pickup games near Greensboro when I was a kid. At least we still have two teams from North Carolina playing.

No offense to the Duke fans out there -- it's a tremendous program and I have great respect for Coach K -- but there was another team on the floor yesterday, and with all the comments, it's as if Duke lost in a vacuum, or simply beat itself.

WVU (yes, I'm a fan) played a great second half. Terrific defense, clutch shooting and their backup point guard almost had a triple-double. Coack K called him a "mini Jason Kidd."

And while WVU certainly isn't a national power, they barely get any recognition for having made the Sweet 16 three out of the last four years, and the Elite 8 once. (Not to mention winning the NIT last year after they probably should have gotten an NCAA bid.) And the year they went to the Elite 8, they lost in OT to Louisville. Just a few seconds from the Final Four. Argh!

What's been fun about this year's team has been the way Huggins has molded John Beilein/three-point-shooting/no-rebounding type players into the kind of players he recruits. They now rebound pretty well, play tough, in-your-face defense and they can still knock down threes. And they have a star in Joe Alexander. The Big East coaches picked WVU 10th before the season. They finished 5th and made it to the semifinals in the Big East Tourney. I wasn't sold on the Huggins hire when he got the job (knowing his occasionally spotty past), but he's certainly proved himself to be a tremendous coach. Making the Sweet 16 (and beating a top program like Duke along the way) with someone else's players is a real accomplishment.

Anyway, if they play well, I think they can beat Xavier. UCLA would be a tough out to get to the Final Four. But you never know. That's why they play the games.

Again, no disrespect to Duke. But I watched every minute of that game, and it looked to me like WVU just wanted it more and played with a lot more toughness.

Rob

Rob, by decrying Duke's weaknesses no one is forgetting West Virginia. They played a great game yesterday, wanted it more, and have a pretty good coach. As long as he can control himself I suspect WVa will have a great future with him.

When I went to Davidson its last NCAA victories under Lefty Driesell were still fresh in everyone's mind (tells you how long ago that was) -- now Davidsonians will have another moment to sustain us for the next 40 years or so (once Stephen Curry graduates)!

Just saw this from James re Duke:

Nevertheless, it's always good to see the despondent faces of the entitled rich kids at Duke when they fail in March.

James, that wasn't mean, it's all too true. I'm an alum of Duke too (grad school) and you are right-- the undegrads are spoiled rotten. Probably no more or less than kids at other rich private schools, but at Duke it comes out at Cameron. Don't get me wrong, I have all the respect in the world for the program and the coach-- but the undergrad fans are an embarrassment a lot of the time.

Tim

Tim, I hear you but the the fans at a Duke game are tame compared to some other schools. I can't ever remember hearing that any fan ever threw anything at an opposing player's family (a la Maryland), threatened another player or his family (Oregon), etc. etc. Duke fans are obnoxious but hardly an embarrassment.

<<I am still doing great. i should be doing well because i spend hours capping games of all sports. I bet on sports for every day of the year. I capped this years tournament for 18 hours. Last year I won 25 k and I only invested 9 hours of capping!>>

Well, since you've got Kent State and Vandy playing next Thursday, it's not all good.
Since you had Kansas losing already to Kent State you better hope they don't go all the way...

James, I don't know what you're talking about. Duke does not have a football team. Oh wait, they did -- and then Steve Spurrier left and took the program with him.

Jeff, good job. Did you know it or did you Google it?

and the answer to your question is of course Curt Dukes! Oddly enough Nebraska has had three QB's transfer to North Carolina schools in the last 5 years (Dukes to Duke, Joe Dailey to North Carolina and Harrison Beck to NC State) How weird is that?

Roy Williams. Class coach. Waits until his team scores 103 points and 3 minutes left in a huge blow out to start taking his starters out. Class guy. I hope someone beats his smirking ass down the road. I guess since his teams have choked so often in past years at Kansas and NC that he wanted to make his 36 point lead was safe. What a jackass.

Dan, I knew Jackman was from Nebraska -- had to confirm that he was the one who actually transferred there. Oh and thanks for Curt Dukes -- really wonderful quarterback, big help.

No problem! I guess the recruiting services got that one wrong....he was rated the number one dual-threat QB coming out of high school.

Incredible, I know. He was so highly rated I thought he'd turn the program around by himself. In the end he barely even threw any passes; they used him at a variety of other positions. Just unreal.

Hey Jeff, since we're on the subject of QBs, many thanks to Duke for making the Dave Brown era possible at the Meadowlands.

Howard, I was hoping that wouldn't come up. He's actually originally from the town next door to where I grew up. I was at Duke when Brown was the QB and I was simply amazed that the Giants would waste a first round (supplemental) choice on him. Insane. As Giants QBs go I'd rate him above Jerry Golsteyn but maybe slightly below Randy Johnson.

Tom, are you rooting my Stanford Cardinal along? They are going to need all the help they can get.

Oh wait, you meant the Louisville Cardinals.

I think he was referring to the St. Louis Cardinals -- Dave Brown's last team.
