Default Old Judge's with holes in them?

Posted By: Eric

I've seen so many old judge cards with holes punched in them like the following card... Any idea what these holes are from and why there are so many out there?

Possibly a redemption program at a tobacco shop/drug store?

If it's a tackhole, they very well may have been tacked onto a wall.

But the one you showed has a distinct punchhole, and I agree with Dan there could have been some redemption (although I've never actually heard of one).

About ten years ago there was a large group, that came from the Newport(RI) Historical Society, sold in a Christies auction. Virtually all the cards had gem photos but about 5% of the cards had these punch holes. Perhaps they were strung for display.

An older collector friend of mine had his brother's 33 Goudeys and every one had a punch hole in it. He explained to me his brother strung them up and hung them in his room.

Rich, I had a bunch of Goudeys and Diamond stars with perfectly clean little punch holes. I didn't know but assumed a kid did it, as it seems like something a kid would do. The holes were in the corners, perfect for stringing on the Christmas tree.

I agree with punch holes, but it is amazing how perfect a worm hole can be.
