Default What do most collectors consider Bob Feller's Rookie card?

Posted By: Richard C

Greetings, I am interested to know what my fellow collectors consider to be the rookie card of Bob Feller? Look forward to some replies.
Thanks

I don't think there can be much debate. It's the 1937 O-Pee-Chee. Some might point to the R-314 Canadian Wide Pen premium which for many years was considered a 1936 issue. But it's been pretty conclusively shown that the Canadian Wide Pens were issued in 1937 at the earliest, and possibly later. Plus, a lot of people don't consider premiums cards.

You'll often see Feller's 1938 Goudey or even his 1948 Bowman advertised as his rookie. But that's just plain wrong. The 1937 O-Pee-Chee is obviously earlier.

both PSA and SGC both slab the R314 Feller 1936. I did read that it is most likely a 1937 issue. I have never read that the r314 issue is a Canadian issue. Where did you get that information?
THank You

I didn't think that the 1937 OPC was considered Feller's rookie. That is a very strange baseball set, as it was produced in Canada and decades before OPC would produce another baseball set. It is also scarce. If I'm not mistaken, most of the ones that exist have the player punched out of the middle because the outline of the player was perforated? Finding them in decent condition without the player being punched out of the middle is next to impossible.

Probably Paul read about the 1937 date for R314C from my article on the Fine/Wide Pen sets in two recent issues of Old Cardboard. If you're interested in these sets at all, it should be pretty helpful. The Canadian origin of the "creamy" Wide Pen set is pretty well established.

That being said, I would probably argue for the R314C as Feller's rookie issue unless, as someone remarked, you are dead against considering premiums as cards. I don't see why they shouldn't be, but everyone can call that as they see it.

I wouldn't argue against the R314C being called a rookie. But I just don't see any way that you can argue the OPC is not a rookie.
