Probably a tie between the Roy Ellam postcard and a Billy Sunday postcard.

Both are unique....The Ellam postcard came from his family and the Billy Sunday Postcard was not even listed in the auction, I won it in a lot of old postcards, but I could clearly see the WA Sunday on the front of the card in the picture. And sure enough the writing on the back of the card, and the postmark confirms it is Billy Sunday.

In eBays earlier days It used to be easy to win good stuff.

I have picked up (won) a couple cards that were not known/cataloged at the time. The only known Holland Ice Cream #16 Peckinpaugh, and the only known side view pose Blue Bird Babe Ruth top the list.

But Ive also picked up some nice rarities for little $$. T214 Victory Tinker advertised as a T206, a group of Ullmans (including Mathewson) for $40 ea.

Even some rare cards for very little $$. 2 NRMT D316's (Sunbeam Stockton) for $1 ea. (postage was more than the cards), and they now book for $275 ea. An F66 (Hughes) for under $10, and a few others.

But not many good deals anymore

Probally this one for me as to rarity. You never see the Ferguson Bakery cards with coupon for the D381 series.

Hey Dave,

I won two of them which were listed at the same time. They are both graded SGC40. If my memory serves me right, I won them for around 2400.00 each in that ball park. My snipe bid was much..much.. higher on them as I have never seen these ever. One thing I do not like about the grading compnies is why they would grade this item higher if the coupon was NOT attached but the corners were sharper???? Zeenuts without coupon should be ALTERED. Maybe there could be a different level of altered? But it downplays the real card being complete in my eyes.

Probably the group of 13 Springfield MA. Rose Postcards that Greenmonster, JC and I won a few years ago. Here's one of the 13:

Edited to add that all 13 can be viewed on my website at:

With the original purchase Greenmonster and I each took 5 and JC 3. I subsequently bought out Greenmonster so I have 10 and JC still has his 3. If history between us is any indication the grouping will never be reassembled.

I was lucky enough last year to BIN a Tarzan Bread card. I sold it, but it was nice to hold in my hands for a little while.

It's not too ridiculously rare, but I hit a $500 BIN on a 1938 Goudey baseball wrapper about a year ago. I've only seen three in my life, and I own two of them (one from each series).

I spoke with SGC about grading them. Given the provenance I could provide they made a preliminary indication that they could slab them "A" even though they are not part of the original Rose issue. I'm inclined to do it for protection if nothing else but will likely wait until the National so I can submit them in person.

Although I didn't win it, I thought this was a pretty unique piece.

I went to hit Buy It Now and hit refresh but I was beaten by a matter of a few seconds. I am still kicking myself over it.

I was able to purchase nine 1913 Voskamp's through an eBay seller. He had a lot of T206s listed and I simply asked him if he had anything else, and he did, nine 1913 Voskamp's. There was no Clarke or Wagner but I was/am still very happy about the deal.

Last year I was able to win three 1911 Baseball Bats including Bender and Collins on eBay amongst a lot of T206s. They all had full borders and presented very well for the set.

Holland Creameries Warren Ogden. I purchased a lot of 108 "tobacco cards" for $12.00 about a year ago, and Ogden was one of them, so I guess I paid 11 cents for it. Needed the money at the time, so I sold it to a board member pretty quickly, but I did manage a couple hundred thousand percent profit.

Two cabinet cards of W. H. "Yale" Murphy. Both of these were purchased from two different eBay sellers at two different times around 1999-2000. The Newsboy was in with other Newsboy cards of actresses and actors, the Pach was with other Yale University cabinet cards in a large size photo album. Presumably a Senior's graduation type album because there were both students and faculty cabinet cards in the album.

My two best ebay purchases were:

1) the group of six 1867 Haymaker CdV's

2) the 1872 Boston photo composite that was actually comprised of 11 CdV's

I guess the only great deals I've made on ebay are the ones where I know something about the early history of baseball and photography that perhaps not everybody else does. When it comes to mainstream vintage cards, I don't think I have ever made more than a modest score. There are no secrets there.
