I knew this was going to come up. I am going to justify my bid below, I can't explain how I ended up getting in a bidding war with someone over the card though... it isn't that amazing or anything.

This particular card was my first vintage experience, my first tobacco
experience, and my first grading experience all wrapped into one. I
submitted it to SGC right when I received it because it looked like
grading was the cool thing to do. Previous to this I only collected
modern stuff in my youth (take that lightly.. I'm only 25) so this was
all new territory for me 3 years ago.

This card started it all for me. I'm not usually the
sentimental type, but I could only watch it come up on eBay so many
times. After the battle with that fella I obviously wish I had grabbed
it prior to this, but it's a small price to pay for a card that won't
leave my collection again unless I sell it all.

Again, I have no clue why the other bidder was so interested in the card. It was very odd to me that he hit my (already outrageous) max bid right on the nose and then didn't bid anymore!? The seller ended this early to avoid anymore crazy bidding when I brought the activity to his attention.

It could've been worse I suppose. I'm confused and relieved all at the same time.

Hi Trae

I'm pleased that you won something which you wanted so very much.
When it comes to these treasures, logic, at times, has very little place in
the scheme of things. At other times, logic is primary.
Your amazing history with this Bender says it all, and says it well.

I still am mesmerized by a dark cap matty which ranks even a grade below
your Bender, in part because my wife and I picked it out together 22 years ago.

all the best,

barry

For whatever it's worth, the "0" feedback "member" you were in a bidding war with, outbid me on a couple of cards this weekend as well. (I thought he was a shill until I saw your auction). I'm sure the seller was a little skeptical about a 0-feedback member bidding so high on a low-grade common. I do admire your perserverence though. I've often times over=paid for a card I really wanted.

Trae, without looking at that underbidder's other bids and looking for a pattern, aren't his actions the hallmark of a shill bid? Bid, bid, bid as if you're crazy for the card and then stop when you meet the high bidder's number and just leave it there at the inflated price?

The whole card only went for two and a quarter. Ive overbid by more than that. And I sure ain't one of the high rollers here.

Seems more like - you bought a card.

A snipe service may have saved you quite a bit in this case.

I used to be a grader for SGC. This was the first card I ever graded. This card started it all for me. I HAD to have that card! And you got the seller to end it early?!?!?!?!?! Come on! Be a man and bid like a man!

I bought two T206 cards for my first T206 cards ever back in 1997 -- a Matty white portrait (now an SGC 60), and this card:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I love the image too, and I can understand your sentiment, but if you made a bid on a vintage baseball card auction with more than 20 seconds left in the auction, you are just asking to be fleeced. Snipe, snipe, snipe... unless you feel good about lining the seller's pocket.

This is my first post but thought I would chime in as I was the seller in this auction. I’m glad Trae got his card back as after talking to him I have found him to be quite the collector and T206 advocate. As a seller I can’t complain about the price of course but isn’t the craziest think I have seen on ebay either (that sounds like a different thread).

He never asked me to end the auction early but I did both because I knew he wanted it (and more than earned it) and any seller would rather sell to someone established than have a 0 feedback bidder come back in the final seconds and win. As for the other bidder, he is not a shill or anything as he has bid on a number of items from multiple sellers lately and did end up winning the lot of T206s I had up that ended the same night and paid promptly. So he is legit and of course could be going after the same cards you are. Lets hope he never learns how to snipe.

In any case, glad to finally contribute to the board which never fails to be informative and amusing. So is the SGC50 posted here what the card looks like after its been soaked? Just kidding.
