Default Ward cabinet card

Maybe there was a problem with the photographer's lense that changed the shape of Ward's head...and the location and detail of his facial features.

the writing on the back strikes me as odd for some reason. Not sure if it's the way the ink bleeds on the paper or what, but just strikes me as odd.

Since Jay already noted that pro baseball's Temple Cup was not around in 1884 (still nine years away), is there any chance that the reference is to some other type of college cup? Apparently, Temple University was founded in 1884 in Philadelphia.

I've noticed that stories and names tend to get modified as time passes, until the current descendant of John Ward's neighbor's barber becomes descended from John Ward himself.

...or someone might have bought a batch of cabinet photos at an antique store for 50 cents each, then matched them up with famous people they looked vaguely similar to, and added some signatures and other "evidence" to the back.
