"Jim Thorpe: Lit by Lightning" is the title of a two-hour documentary premiering on The History Channel on Monday, July 7th, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The documentary explores the life and career of Jim Thorpe, a Native American athlete who achieved legendary status in multiple sports, including football and track and field, and overcame significant obstacles, including racism. The film highlights his triumphs at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, where he won gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon, and delves into the controversies surrounding his career, such as the stripping of his medals due to accusations of professionalism.
The documentary aims to provide a comprehensive look at Thorpe's life, including his time at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, his professional sports career, and the challenges he faced as a Native American athlete in a society rife with prejudice. It also examines his later struggles with alcoholism and financial difficulties, ultimately portraying him as a complex and resilient figure. The film features interviews with Native American scholars, historians, athletes, and sports commentators, as well as utilizing Jim Thorpe's own writings. "Jim Thorpe: Lit by Lightning" is directed by Chris Eyre, a Native American filmmaker, and produced by Uninterrupted, a media company co-founded by LeBron James. The documentary is part of History Honors 250, a celebration of Native American history and culture. This video is the official trailer for the documentary "Jim Thorpe: Lit by Lightning": |

Just watched it — thought it was very well executed use of real and reenacted footage and his own words via unpublished autobiography.
