Default Protecting vintage magazine - but still able to read?

Hello all

I’m wondering if any vintage magazine or yearbook collectors might have a suggestion for me.

I recently picked up a Beautiful 1947 time magazine with Jackie Robinson on the cover. I plan to use this as a backdrop to my two favorite Jackie Robinson cards.

But I also enjoy pulling the magazines down from time to time to either read the articles or have a laugh at some of the vintage advertising.

I’m worried that I may smudge the cover of the magazine when I take it down to read it. I’d like to maintain the pristine cover, ideally.

Other than buying gloves to wear while handling the magazine, has anyone seen any kind of protective cover that only fits the front of the magazine but still allows you to open and review the inside of the magazine itself?

I hope my question makes sense, thanks for any suggestions.

Jeff

Hi Jeff. I googled “plastic covers for magazine covers only”. You might see something there.

You could also display a full-size color copy of the cover.

I would not try to protect the cover only. The extra weight and "pull" of the protective sleeve might cause the front cover to detach more easily.

I would just order one of these, and slide out the entire Magazine on the rare occasion you flip the pages/read it...

These Magazine Toploaders are rigid enough that you can easily display the Magazine on an easel or tripod as a backdrop for your cards.

Digitizing it into pdf allows you to read it and search the content without worrying about causing damage.

Some magazines are already digitized. Sometimes members on here borrow online magazine subscriptions to download content they want. If you have a local university nearby, or some sort of archives you could buy a community member card and gain access to their services.

I bought a Tip Top Weekly from 1899, and it was already in rough shape. Many of these are on an online collection, so I never need to remove mine from its comic book holder.

Default My opinion

I handle a LOT of magazines - not just sports. As suggested above DO NOT attempt to just protect the cover. If the magazine is that "pristine" and preserving the value is important to you, then I wouldn't even handle it and consider getting graded by CGC. As far as wanting to read or look at advertisements, as has been suggested try to find a digitized copy or spring for another copy in poor condition for "reading". If you don't care about preserving value, then just do whatever makes you happy!

I am actively buying and selling vintage sports cards graded and raw. Feedback as a buyer: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=297262

I am accepting select private consignments of quality vintage cards (raw or graded) and collecting "want" lists for higher end ($1K+) vintage cards.
