Default T206 Photo Project

In conjunction with collector Matt Haynes, the SABR Baseball Cards Research Committee is attempting to crowdsource and compile the most complete collection of T206 card-photo matches possible. We are currently at 103/524 and would whatever help we can get from any of you.

https://sabrbaseballcards.blog/2020/...photo-project/

Please send any and all tips our way that aren't already accounted for on the page.

I'm surprised the confirmed number is that low. I thought the ports had mostly surfaced. This is not really my area, so take it with a grain of salt. To me, the Irv Young photo in the other thread, is as close a match as the Stahl no glove, if not more so. Rob

Both of these are very close to the Solly Hofman. Could be a composite of both?

Default T206 Photo

Sometime ago someone posted a NY Giants Team photo that had approx 10-12
Photos that were used for their T206 cards.
Maybe someone can dig it up from the Net 54 Arcives.

I may be off on this one too but I always thought the Jack Pfeister sitting pose looked strange. Is it possible the just used a head shot and added the body? This photo I found on a Cubs composite looks very similar (the collar is off but the hat position looks the same). Not sure though?

I have done a ton of research on photos used to make cards through RMY Auctions and I believe a large number of the early cards like T206 etc. used generic bodies and sometimes used head shots etc. I also believe many were "inspiration" photos that were then used to make cards so they are nearly identical matches but spacing might be off or something to that nature to fit the spacing of a small card. There are many cards that people have been on quests for years to find the original source photographs that I think do not exist, like the E90-1 Joe Jackson for example. Someday someone is going to find a photo of some sandlot guy leaning on a bat and find out it was the photo used to make the Joe Jackson card in my opinion.

Having said that, many will never be found because there are no "matches" but it sounds like a cool project.

I have been looking for the Doyle with Bat photo for a long time. If someone out there has it I'd love to see it

I would have bit on that Irv Young in a nanosecond but when Andrew Aronstein AND Tom Shieber both decide it's a no, I gotta take their word for it. I'll follow that other thread for a bit in case something new develops.

I was just commenting, not lobbying. Maybe Dr. Cycleback will pipe-up and take my side. ha-ha.

I do think it's fair to point out, that Jake Stahl "Glove doesn't show" is the wrong identifier for that card, if the photo that you all have for it is correct. The card should be called "Bat doesn't show." Cheers, Rob

Wow, that second Hofman is just a beauty in its own right. And while the grip on the bat differs from the card, it seems like a closer match. I'll have Matt take a look and make the call, but my own verdict would be YES.

You may be onto something with the body being added. Still I'm not totally convinced the heads are a close enough match.

This really illustrates how tough this project will be. My sense is the photo is close but not quite a match. At the same time, I could see the artist deciding to shorten the pitcher's arm to have it fit the card. We may have to start a Maybe folder.

Many matches in the Reach and Spalding guides with the photographers attributed. Including -- Conlon, Van Oeyen, and T.D. Richter. Finding examples of the actual photos will be a challenge.

There you go! There are a lot more. Just takes time and patience to match them up. Is there a photog attributed to that one?

By the end of the afternoon we will be past 200/524 thanks to Andrew and others who have provided help. If we find upgrades on quality we will update, but we will definitely take these newsprint publications in the meantime.

I just found two incredible photos at the Chicago History Museum archives. You may recognize the pics as the T206 images of Hugh Duffy and Fred Payne.EBC11CEE-0CDC-43A4-BBC2-604F9F82A7BD.jpg
