Quick DiMaggio pricing help needed
I saw this 1951 Berk Ross DiMaggio at a show this morning. It's slabbed and authenticated by SGC. I'm not an autograph guy at all, but this one just spoke to me for some reason. Was hoping to get a quick price opinion. I see lots of completed eBay sales, but mostly for post-career cards and balls. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! This is for me, not a flip.
ETA: neither the card nor the auto are graded, just authenticated.

Thanks Stephen. Anyone else think that sounds about right?

Not worth more than 150 you can not see all of the signature.

Shelly,
I have a question.... Why do you value this so low? an unsigned Berk Ross goes for more than 150 usually. Just trying to learn here. |

I won't put words in Shelly's mouth, but I believe he is referring to the poor contrast on the dark background. A significant portion of the autograph has poor contrast.
From a card purist perspective, the card is ruined. From an autograph perspective, it is subpar quality due to contrast issues.

What Steve said, and I'll also add that the only way (in my mind) that you'd get more is from a segment of the hobby that collects this set signed.
With that said, I think it's a poor set to collect signed due to the contrast of the card vs the autograph so I'm guessing not many would be collecting them signed. Just my .02 |

Thanks to everyone for the very helpful feedback. I ended up buying the card at a price between Shelly's estimate and Stephen's estimate. I do understand the downsides of the card and the limitations on resale, but I still thought the card was neat and unusual. Your feedback did help me negotiate the price down pretty substantially, so thanks again!

In that case I would say you did just fine. The contrast issue seems to affect maybe 20% of the autograph. While I can see that affecting the value somewhat, I don't think that it is a major concern.
Also, it wouldn't just be collectors of this signed set who would be interested. This isn't Hank Bauer we are talking about here. There would be plenty of interest from those who collect Joe D signed cards as well. Nice pickup for sure. Tom C |

I still think it's a beautiful card.
