Default Lew Lipset sale catalog, Winter 1997 (20 years ago)

brianp-beme's post of a couple of Lew Lipset price lists from the mid-1980s prompted me to dig out my Lipset stuff from a little later, in the mid-to-late 90s. Below are the most interesting pages from his Winter Catalog #27, dated January 25, 1997 -- almost exactly 20 years ago. On the cover is a reconstructed advertising poster for N284 Buchner Gold Coin baseball cards, consisting of cards overprinted with heavy black lettering. Lipset was selling this 37-card group for $2500, as described on the table of contents page. We had a thread a few months ago in which several people posted N284s with that kind of overprint lettering. I have an N284 Sam Crane with the same lettering as the second card from the left on the bottom row, with the "BUCH" from Buchner at the bottom and part of the N and F at the top.

In addition to the cover, letter from Lew, and table of contents, I've scanned the first three pages of the consignments section, including the collection of Tom Wickman, a prominent collector from the 60s and 70s. I've also scanned the first 10 pages of the "cards for sale" section, which includes T cards, postcards, and 19th century stuff. It's interesting to see which prices have gone up much more than others. The T210s were selling for a small fraction of what those same cards would go for today. Luckily I got into T210s and T212s back then and bought what I could with my limited means.

David, thanks for all the posting you have done of early hobby pubs and price lists.

These 2 cards appear to have been positioned at the bottom left corner of the N284 ad sheet. I'm sure your card of Crane is in much better shape than mine!

I could look at these old price guides all day! He didnt have any of the 9 T210-7 cards still on my wantlist. Confirming at least to me that they are indeed as tough to acquire as seems.

Default Owner 113

Thanks for posting David...I have that catalog lying around but it is a lot easier just to look at it on the computer.

20 years ago I did end up purchasing one of the lots listed under Owner 112. I guess that would make me Owner 113 of those cards.

Thanks for posting those, David. Lew's auctions were a type card collectors best friend. I remember many fond memories of winning super rare cards from his auctions. His auctions were some of the best.

Lew had an amazing inventory. Nothing more to say about that.

Love the fact that you don't see PSA or SGC or GAI or anything like them mentioned in this baby. I have a great old REA catalog with some great high end stuff......all raw. Nothing graded.

Thanks,

AndyH
