Going back to the same store tomorrow, may be leaving with a Jersey Joe 51 Ringside and a 55 Topps Hank if I'm feeling spry...

Welcome.

Very nice start to your collection.

If you are into boxing cards, check out the T9 set. Cards are huge and exquisite.

Thanks Tom. I'm very new to this and I'm excited to see where it may lead.

As far as value goes, I know they aren't baseball but does boxing carry decent value?

Would any of these be worth grading?

Thanks!

I say store, but it's an antique shop in the mountains of Western NC. I was gonna by the Hank but couldn't pull the trigger. It has some wear on the bottom that scared me off a bit. I'm gonna give it another look

For the most part, value is far less than their baseball counterparts.

There is a website called vintagecardprices.com where you can see what a bunch of the boxing sets look like as well as their graded values. I thing you can buy a one day subscription if you just want to look around.

There are some wonderful boxing sets out there.

Deal! Although I'm still on the fence. I'll take a pic and post it this afternoon, prolly around 1-2. Maybe you guys can help me decide if it's worth its price.

How many in the set?

I'll likely be picking up the Jersey Joe Walcott and Jess Willard today from my treasure trove I found last weekend.

I've seen the Jess go for decent money on eBay in good shape.

I've also seen the Baer I got last week go for good money in a PSA 9 which mine is far from.

Makes me think about getting mine graded though...especially that sugar ray 56 Adventure. But i could be way off, thats why I joined here!

There are 96 in the Complete Set - the Low Numbers 1-48 & the slightly tougher High Numbers, 49-96.

There are a few short prints that can be QUITE tough to find, too, but I have never taken this set on so I don't know HOW difficult they really are. I'm sure SOMEONE here collects them and can give you a better answer about how challenging this set is tho...

As for grading, MY OPINION is if you are keeping the card for the longer term - don't get it graded yet. It's ALWAYS enjoyable to FEEL the card, esp since you know it is the real deal. You can always use it to compare with other cards that may have questionable authenticity, size, etc. (Although I would use a common for that...)

If you want to do it for protection or insurance or re-sale or so your wife(?), kids(?) know what it is just in case - by all means get it graded.

Excellent info Eggo. Not sure if I wanna resale or not...I love that Baer though, rich color still, probably keeping it.

Maybe I'll grade the sugar ray..

The ones you posted aren't worth grading. The 1956 Adventure cards are abundantly available in really nice shape because of some vending finds about 20 years ago, and rarely hit big money unless they are really high grade, which yours are not because of the centering, which is the limiting factor with them in general. You will likely get a 6 on the Robinson, which translates to not worth the cost of slabbing.

As for values, it really depends on the item. Rare stuff can fly; common stuff will drag. FWIW, Sterling usually has boxing in its monthly auctions and Love of the Game has 23 lots in its current auction.

Got any questions, post them in the boxing forum. And please check out my site.
