Default First PSA card graded?

I've seen several references recently to the Gretzky Wagner being the first card graded by PSA. I always assumed the 00000001 cert number was a trophy number for PR. For instance there is no 00000002 using the cert verification. Looking at historical ads in Old Cardboard you see a lot of nice cards with that old flip font and cert numbers below 1mm, ie; 01000001, 01000544, 01000840 etc. Confusing though because there are also cards with 90mm handles like 90000001 or 90363515. A few years ago there was a big deal when they graded their 20mm card and gave it a cert of 20000000. My recent subs are sequential and seem to be in line with that milestone. Anyone know for certain what the first card was or what the early numbering signified?

I may be wrong, but I thought the first graded cards were 52 Topps owned by Dave Hall.

Is that a pencil mark about two-thirds down from the top in the center?

It was a rush job... Let's just say the exacto knife wasn't very exacto and the card inside would have fallen well short of PSA 8

BCCG and PRO would likely grade this a 9.

Big wavy borders, definitely hand-cut. Yep, that is a scrap alright!

As long as all of whatever is there, is at least authentic, I don't have any issue with an AUT holder. But that can't be their second card graded....though it would be funny.

Was it truly graded or just put in a slab with a label?

Cert #00000002 doesn't come up in PSA's database.

Default That is not their second card graded

That Wagner was submitted by 707 and sold in their first (i Think) and I believe only SCD PSA card auction. That was also the first Card they (PSA) slabbed without a number grade. It was absolutely Authentic and I have no problem with that being in a holder. If memory serves me correct it sold for less then 10k. This was somewhere around 1996-97 era.

Good one ,Leon. And I still can't figure out how Joe Orlando has escaped scrutiny of all the recent card fraud investigations.

I assure you Joe O. hasn't escaped scrutiny. I just think he passes the test. Even though I don't agree on everything PSA does I don't think, from everything I have seen, Joe is complicit in any wrongdoing (maybe I will be proven wrong). From what I recall he was either in college and/or in Minor League Baseball when that first Wags was graded. As far as other things, I have never seen evidence of anything except them losing Dan's card.

Default Fair Playing field

Leon, you may be right but let's not completely overlook what was probably not an even playing field when it came to Jo Schmo submitting cards for grading as opposed to big auctionhouses submitting to PSA and getting more liberal higher grades from them.Someone would have to convince me that this was NOT the case.
