1914 cj matty

I see the thread in the BST section about à cj 1914 christy mathweson.

Anybody know why this card is sold rare why it is a short print?
Any exclamation of the scarcity for this card?

1914 CJs are generally quite a bit tougher than 1915s. The Matty from the 1914 set (unlike most 1914s) is a different pose from the 1915 portrait so that raises its desirability too. Some collect all the combined front poses from the two sets, thus making it a tough one for the completist. I'm not sure that it is actually tougher than other 1914s, but is just in VERY high demand. Others may have more/different info on this. Chance is another tough unique one from 1914.

Your not comparing apples to apples here. Those cards weren't short prints in the sense that they made less of them for a reason like today's modern short prints.

They were pulled from production so I suppose by default they were short prints in some sense.

I don't think there are any short prints in either CJ set there are just some cards that sell better then others. The matty has a great full pitching pose and is an early color card. That plus the above pushes the price, but there are other CJ rarer then the matty.

I completely agree with James regarding rarity of the 1914 CJ Matty versus other cards in the set. It has been about a year since I ran the numbers (and I certainly understand the vagaries of the population reports on SGC and PSA, with crossovers and what not), but between SGC and PSA, there were 35 graded examples of the 1914 CJ Matty. With it being a very high demand and expensive card, there would certainly be incentive to get any raw examples graded, whereas common players may spend a greater portion of their life "roaming freely" outside of plastic confines. Having said that, there are 111 (of the 144) cards in the 1914 CJ set with 35 or fewer examples graded by SGC and PSA combined. In fact, there are 45 cards in the set with 20 or fewer PSA/SGC graded examples.

One could make an argument that the 1914 CJ Matty is, in fact one of the more common cards in the set......it is just that the demand is so high. According to the population reports, the Cobb is actually the most common card in the set, with about 90 graded examples.

By the way, I would be interested in purchasing a low grade example of the Matty (PSA/SGC 1 or 2) if anybody has one available and is looking for a new home for their's. Unfortunately I am not interested in "authentic" copies.

The 1914 Mathewson was an ugly image and looks drawn by a kid (holding the ball well past release point). Im sure they replaced it in the 1915 set with that attractive portrait because of this.

Ive always thought all 1914s were printed in the same numbers, and the only reason the Mathewson and Chance have a premium is because they are different or not included in the far more common 1915 set. Same thing for the Chase card that replaced the Chance, except since it is a 1915 only card it is far more common than a 1914 exclusive card like the Mathewson (uglypose) and Chance.

try to find any specific player in 1914, they are always far far scarcer than the 1915s
