IMO, it would either grade a 1 or Authentic.

From VCP:

Authentic $177
PSA 1 $243 (although the last one sold for $120).

If it were mine, I would throw out a price of $200 OBO.

Shouldn't it carry a premium for being the rare upside-down version?!

Default 53t Mays

the card was actually a PSA slabbed card,,it was PSA1, I took it out of holder yrs ago to fit in my album.
I guess that sounds about right..a $2500 card in NM, selling for about 30 bucks.. thats what 1 or 2% or book ? seems fair to me

I also have a 34G Gehrig , also was in a PSA holder as a 1, was also removed.. its the cheaper one..the # 61..it books for around $1900. in NM.. Im assuming I could get ..Oh I dont know maybe $19 bucks ..although that seems a bit high..thats 10% of book ..maybe a bit less ??

Ralph, if you're talking about letting the Gehrig go for $19 I'll take it

Mr. Hangman--I would take any and all cards that you have broken out of slabs. I think I am still behind on the trade front---but this deal is too good to be true.

Default pricing ??

Jim,
The fellow member is offer me $20 for a 53T Mays with a NM value of 2500. Isnt that a couple of % ?

And now my 34 Goudey Gehrig...also low grade..books at 1900....yes 10% is 190...but Im guessing he is going to come in with an offer similar to the Mays..which 1% is 19 bucks....I dont know I gotta doublecheck with him ??

20$ is 8/10ths of one percent or .008.

I think the guy has his math wrong and as nice as it would be to get them that cheap, i don't want to see anyone get taken advantage of because his math isn't that great.

if what i am reading is correct, he thinks it is 10%, not 1 %

I've been thinking that either there is some serious confusion about what's going on here, or Ralph's posts have been more in a joking manner to poke some fun at whoever's throwing out the severely low-ball offers. I haven't made up my mind on which one's going on though...

I believe we have all three; confusion, joking, and bad math.

I didn't see any post where the card was offered for sale, or anywhere that he asked for offers. He just asked for opinions on if the card was worth $20 or not.

I pm'd him and told him I personally would only go $30 if it wasn't trimmed...he responded to my pm with the whole 1% of near mint value thing, to which I replied with an explanation which included 2011 SCD valuation and the fact that I like the card, but don't need it for my collection. I also wrote I expected he could get more than $30 and if it were mine, I'd offer it at $100 (depending on what I paid originally) and not be surprised if I had to go as low as $50.

Then I read his post about the $19 Gehrig.....................

I probably wouldn't even pay $30 for it now, but I am curious what Chris thought it is worth. The only other value opinion I see in this thread is from Vintagetoppsguy and I certainly understand the thought process there.

I get that Tony. He could clearly get more than $20 for the Mays. The Gehrig though. $19? Just seems ridiculous. I obviously haven't seen it yet though. The whole 1-5 or 10% thing makes perfect sense for complete and total beaters, BUT there are certain cards that the general rules don't apply to. The Gehrig is definitely one of those cards. Even in worst possible condition. I think that card doesn't drop below 15-20% NM value..

I agree.....

My personal starting point is : 1/2 of 2011 SCD VG value, then depending on several factors including condition and "does it fit my collecting focus?" I adjust from there. Usually equates to a low grade card, but I am fine with that.

For an iconic card like the Gehrig, I don't expect to ever see it offered at my personal starting point (unless it is truly in very poor condition).

53 topps Mays, wouldn't surprise me at all to see it offered at my starting point!

Tony

Ralph,

If you TRULY believe that the Mays and Gehrig are only worth $39 combined, then I will give you 3X that ($117).

Hey buddy...
I sent you an email (your aol account)
Please read it if you got it.
Full disclosure to all, I am not trying to buy the cards.
I have a Mays and while I would love another Gehrig, I am not after the cards.
Your Card pal,
Brian

Very simple solution. Post it in the live auction section. You WILL get a lot more than $20 for it. I'll open bidding with $40 (it will go for much more)

Ditto the Gehrig

I'm calling BS on this entire thread. The OP claims that the Mays was bought as a PSA 1. VCP average for a PSA 1 is $244. The OP had to pay somewhere in that ballpark for the card, but only thinks it's worth $20? Come on! Who believes this crap?

To the OP: This is the BST section. If the cards are for sale, list them with a price. If you only want to know what they're worth (and I think you already know), then address your question in the proper section.

David,
That meter is funny as hell !..Ive never seen that one before..but come on..take it easy on me..Im just trying to clean out a bunch of old junk cards to make my downsizing/ house move more manageable.
Now Im not trying to pull a fast on you here, but would you mind if I added a few bucks to your offer of $117 for the 53T Mays and 34G Gehrig..just for shipping charges...nothing outragous..two plastic sleeves and a bubble pack.

Ralph,

If you're seriously willing to accept my offer of $117, then I would certainly add a few bucks for shipping. In all honesty though, I think you are selling yourself short because I think the cards are worth more than that, and I think most others would agree. I'm just trying to be fair and honest with you. However, if you still want to sell them for that price, I will take them. If so, send me a PM and let me know how you prefer to be paid.

Regards,

David

Default Its finally complete

OK, all this jibber-jabber can finally stop about these two stupid worn down beat up baseball cards.
I stopped at a Coin Shop on the way home from work,I told the owner where I was at with these two cards ( 53T Mays, 34G Gehrig),the old guy explained to me how it works with older collectables....unless the item is in exceptional condition...it really doesnt matter much..Silver Dollars,Kennedy Halfs,whatever..they get melted down...they are worth much more in that manner, the only exception is the GemMint uncirculated type coins ( which would translate to a PSA GemMint 10..although he told me you couldnt say "uncirculated" on the PSA label....unless the card went straight from the Topps factory and into virgin cotton gloved hands),..But the point is the most lucrative and desired value is the recycled aspect of it all,and that is the key to it,there are people out there that feel they can do more with it when the commodity is in its most pure ,natural, and original form..no doubt about it..All you need to do is check the precious metals and raw materials market..Its gone thru the roof !!
It doesnt pay to do it any other way,so to get the most "bang for my buck" so to speak..Im going for it..full bore.
This guy has been doing Coins for over 30 yrs..for a while he also dealt in stamps..but the way he explained it..something about the PostOffice constantly raising the price of stamps..he couldnt compete ( Honestly, I didnt get that part..I mean stamps go up what ? 2 cents- 5 cents a year?)..thats gonna make or break the guy ?..but anyway,I wasnt going to press him on it.
Moving foward,Id like to thanks all for the help, advice, opinions, etc.. there are a lot of sharks out there, and the smell of blood in the water can ....you know....

Default Mays

a '53 mays in any condition is worth much more than $20. If you are unsure of a cards value put it in an auction format and let the bidders make the decision for you....that coin guys advice doesn't apply to cards really, star cards and rookies in any shape 60s and earlier almost always sell for 5% of book, sometimes 10% or more depending just on how rough of shape it is

Reading this thread feels like im reading someone speak english in a second language while purposely trying to confuse me (which obviously is happening). The posts from the lead especially in relation to precious metals is one of the funnier intentional things, that ironically alot of people will believe is real, ive read in a while. If only this whole thing wasnt a joke.
