Default harpers weekly cover, who is it

guys, some help with identification on this cover please. the letters look like ts on the outside area of the jersey.

I have a complete copy of this issue and have been through it three times and still can't find any reference to the cover. There is some baseball content but I don't see any info relating to the cover. I will continue to look and post info if I can find anything useful.

Could it just be a generic artist's image? Here is the same player portrayed on a Hand Fan.

If either of you could give the date of that Harpers Issue, it would be much appreciated.... thanks!

the date of the cover is legible in his photos May 2nd, 1908

I think it looks a bit like Mathewson, based solely on the TS on the jersey and the haircut.

Well they certainly used gloves/mitts by 1908, so I would bet it's simply an artist's depiction (based on the barehanded player). Perhaps Matty served as a slight influence for this drawing, but he never played in the barehanded era...
