Now I thought the 1928 Hornsby was horizontal, with him bending over and fielding, and with Boston... What is this Exhibit??? PSA said it is a 1928, unless the seller (or predecessor) has tinkered with it...

Frank.

It's a PC-back exhibit. The boxed name is printed over the original player name/team from the first printing.

Says Boston NL on the bottom, jersey clearly says the Cardinals. Am I missing something?

Hornsby is with the Cardinals as he tags out Babe Ruth to end the 1926 World Series, game 7, top of the 9th.... Then Hornsby leaves and Frisch arrives.

So by 1928 Hornsby is long gone. Hence the paper paste over?

It is one of the 1925-31 PC back cards. It is the second of three Hornsby cards. There are five cards with card front legend variations (Cobb, Frisch, Rouch [sic], Peckinpaugh and Hornsby) that have update labels pasted on them to reflect trades. Hornsby’s original card shows him with the Cardinals and the relabeled card shows him with Boston, a trade that took place after the 1927 season. Hornsby’s third card shows him with the Cubs and is quite difficult to find, I suspect because by 1929 he was a part-time player and the card may have been pulled after a relatively short print run. If I had to estimate it I would say that the Hornsby Boston card is the easiest of the three to find and that the Chicago card is the toughest.
