Love the 1974 OPC Aaron specials... Never seen those before. Didn't see the 1973 Topps pin up... Do you need that one ? The 1973 comic is awesome !

There is a story behind the '73 Pin up. Years ago, I bought the comic from a seller that had both the pin up and comic for sale. I knew my then wife (now ex-wife) would be less than thrilled if I bought both, so I just bought the comic and figured I would pick up the pin up later. I haven't seen one in a price range I wanted since then ( a sad FYI: at the time, both were less than $200). I am still looking for a low to mid grade one.

RobertC,
As another Aaron collector (with my father), I really question the 1980 date on your second Dayton Daily News. I await some "better proof", like to see the card in the actual newspaper or something. Let me explain:

1. I realize that this was printed as a commemorative card, with "one card every 100 years", but why not have Aaron's FINAL STATS listed (not even his 755HRs) listed in 1980 when his career ended in 1976?
2. If you look at the stats, these correspond to the end of the 1975 season, and at that time Aaron contemplated retirement, so MAYBE the card was produced at the end of that season to commemorate his legacy (as he had still broken the HR record, and over 3700 hits).
3. I have seen 1980 listed by several people as the print year of this DDN, but after 5 different inquiries to those experts, not one has been able to give me a DATE or even a MONTH when this was printed in 1980. I have scoured several months of the DDN in both early 1980 and late 1975/early 1976 with no luck.

Would love to hear from you on your thoughts or knowledge on the card
Thanks
Dave

Default Scan Request

RobertC,
It is always nice to see cards that I am still searching for (like the 1968 Plaks and the 1973 Comics, as well as Al's beautiful Aaron standup), but quite a surprise after collecting Aaron for over 10 years to see a variation that I did not know existed.

The 1962 Salada coin Aaron with the 180 player back I have never seen. I quickly looked on eBay and saw several other players (low # coins) with the 180-player back variation. Is your Aaron back to same as those (displaying a completely different pattern), or is the variation only a change in the # itself?
Thanks
Dave

Sorry I missed this earlier, but I had five grandkids over getting dressed up for Halloween and it was crazy. The backs are two different patterns. This is a bigger scan of the backs. Wish it was clearer, but my scanner does not like PSA's coin slab. The one on the right is the 180 version. I got lucky on this one. When I found out about the two variations, I checked and I already had the 180 back. Finding a 200 back was easy.

What a great collection Robert I read the comment about the pin up and comic You made the right choose buying the comic over the pin up. Scott

Default Room

I really enjoy viewing all of the cards you have posted; some great stuff. To me, even better than the cards, are all of the items you have displayed in your office/room. Really like the way you have your items displayed. Is that a lawyer/barrister bookcase? If so, would love to see a pic of the whole bookcase. I'd like to do something similar in my room which is currently in disarray, but it's a work in progress.

On the card front, do you also collect proof items of Hank cards? If so, would love to see.

I really like the publications that Jason posted; the Jet, w/the b&w Aaron is way cool. If you don't collect issues with Hank on the cover I'd recommend doing so. Personally it's fun trying to track down all of the unique publications with your player on the cover. I went a little overboard on this front and started purchasing publications w/articles of my favorite player...I wouldn't suggest being like me (even though most of the articles are a really good read!).

Dave,

The only evidence(?) I have for the date is that I purchased it in a lot of cards and it was in an envelope marked "1980". I agree that there is no evidence to the date. I read somewhere that it could have been printed on the 100'th anniversary of the Dayton Daily News, and that another player's card was printed on the next day to commemorate their next 100 years, but I never followed it up. I like the card and should have done more research, but I never got around to it. I really would like to get the full story on it.

Thanks for imparting both your knowledge and that 67 Topps disc. Another "killer" item from your amazing collection.
