Default 1963 Jello Original art

One-of-a-kind collection of twenty two different design boards that the art department of General Foods created to be used in the production of their 1963 Jell-O gelatin baseball card promotion. All of the depictions were created on single 15" x 20" sections of medium-weight board that revealed photos of either eight players (created for use on 3 oz. packages) or nine players (created for use on 6 oz. packages). The original Kodachrome photos are mounted directly to the board and are visible through windows that were cut into an additional upper layer that also contains the cards' bordering and appropriate text. Every piece is still protected by a covering sheet that was mounted folio style to one edge. When the additional protective covering is raised, a complete view of the included cards may be seen, just as they were in printed form, only larger and without the yellow coloration in the stats section (which was added later by the printer). The mounted Kodachrome photos are actually larger than the visible area provided by their window cut-outs. A lift of the text/window layer affords the unique opportunity of a full view of these quality portraits (credited by some sources to noted photographer Art Shay.) As is the case with most production pieces of this type, each of the card's individual originals are far larger than the finished products. (This is habitually done in the industry to allow the "tightening-up" of reduction to minimize any small flaw that may occur in the final rotogravure printing.) All of the individual bordered card images on these 22 boards measure close to 4-7/8" x 3-3/4"—far more clear, colorful and impressive than the printed cards.

I am providing scans of a few. Others available upon request.

I love the old original mechanicals, you really needed a skilled set of people all through the process to make something look good in print back in the day. The picture peeking through a cutout process was used by Old Judge as well.

It's hilarious to me that he eliminates the dollar signs in the prices, as if we're in some pricey restaurant. Ha ha.

Default Jello Art

Thank you for posting this. I was able to categorize my 1963 Jell-o cards by looking at your picture. Do you know of anyone that has the box listings for the 1962 Post Cereal Football, both Canadian and U.S. issues?
