M101-4 vs M101-5
How do you tell the difference between the M101-4 and the M101-5 sets? I know over on Old Cardboard they say they are closely related. They are a bit vague regarding any discernable difference. I just snagged this card on the Bay. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Come to South Florida and I will buy you a beer/drink or twelve

If you check out the combined checklist on OC, you will notice differences in card numbers, player photos, and team designations between the -5 and -4 sets. The basic design of the two sets is the same (image border, size, etc.)
The back advertisements differ based on the -5 and -4 designation, too. For example, Sporting News ads are found only on -4 cards. The OC site breaks this down, too. Todd Schultz and Tim Newcomb wrote an article for Old Cardboard Magazine #16. I highly recommend picking up a back issue. |

Yours is one of the 27 cards found in both sets with the same photo and caption. However, m101-5s are far more likely to be toned like your Rariden than are m101-4s, so yours is probably the earlier m101-5.

While we have the attention of M101 experts maybe I can ask a question. Is it safe to soak these cards? I have 3 of them with black paper glued to the backs.
Thanks, Dave |
