I'm told the veterans' Committee has been re-instated (no surprise, everything always reverses itself), and that Smokey Joe Wood is the earliest guy on their list....why?

Julie,

The entire process is listed on the Baseball Hall of Fame website.

The VC now only meets every 2 years and the criteria for getting voted in by them is pretty strict now, but I am sure someone will figure out a way to exploit the process for their buddies.

but I didn't see anything that would automatically exclude earlier players...did I not read carefully enough, or is Smokey Joe Wood just the Old Folks' Earliest Cherse?

The Veterans' Committee meets every two years to vote on players. For managers, umpires and executives, they are voted on every four years (next time for them -- 2007).

As for Wood being the oldest...I'm under the impression that the "old-timers" are being passed over because of the memories of those doing the voting. That's why good players who shouldn't be in the running (Oliva, Colavito, etc.) are up for this vote but not more deserving guys like Cecil Travis or Lefty O'Doul.

I believe there was an earlier vote to determine the finalists. Joe Wood just happens to be the oldest player that received enough votes to be a finalist.

There was an original list of 200 players that included some 19th century players but they were eliminated when they brought the list down to 25 guys to vote on.Go to search on the hall of fames website and enter veterans committee[make sure to spell it right Julie] and youll find a page with all of the players along with stats and brief bios
