Considering letting my Tinker go, I am aware of 3-4 other examples, is this the toughest 42? Highest graded

This thread will provide references to major contributions posted on Net54 these past 14 years that have formed a better understanding of "The Monster" [as Bill Heitman
so aptly coined his T206 book (circa 1980)].
Let's start with the 2005-2006 publication of Scot Reader's Inside T206
An excellent, very informative, and well written book that inspired many of us Net54ers to post our experiences and theory's regarding the complexities of the T206 series.

One of the early and very significant T206 threads was posted in June 2006 by Barry Arnold, titled T206 EPDG- - - how rare in your collection ?
This thread sparked lots of brainstorming among Net54ers regarding T206's. It included surveys; and, various aspects of the T206 series were explored.....resulting in 363
meaningful posts. Furthermore, between many of us Net54ers, this thread was...."the beginning of a beautiful friendship" (to quote Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca).

In the Summer of 2006, Bill Brown posted his T206 Super-Set (excel) spreadsheet. Bill received 1000's of inputs from Net54ers for this spreadsheet. It was a great start
in the pursuit of what a T206 "master" set would be comprised of....T206 Super-Set

Sept 2007, I started a thread titled Joe Doyle NAT'L and it's 11 "cousins"....SURVEY to explore certain PIEDMONT 350 cards that I considered as rare as the Joe Doyle
"error" card. I eventually referred to these particular T206's as the Elite 11

Subsequent posts in this thread will expand on theory's regarding the structure of the T206 series and the front/back permutations that have resulted. A fair number of the
theory's presented on Net54 (since 2006) have withstood the test of time. Providing accurate lists of which front/back combos were printed. And, which ones are No-Prints.

So, stay tuned......many more T206 "oldies but goodies" References and Reflections will be posted here.

And, feel free to contribute any meaningful T206 stories, or experiences collecting T206's that you have.

In this thread, I've tried to present some very complex aspects of the Series structure of the T206 set in a style which is understandable to most of the T206 collectors.
However, if not clear, don't be shy about asking questions. Post your questions on this thread. Or, email me with your question.... tedzan11@comcast.net
In either event, I will gladly do my best to provide you clear and meaningful answer(s).

A great ongoing thread. I noticed that it just passed 666,666 views, which of course puts this heavenly thread well past purgatory and into red hot and fiery territory.

Keep up the good work Ted!

Re-visiting PIEDMONT 460 Fac. #42 cards....are there any more than 72 of them ?

The PIEDMONT FACTORY #42 cards are somewhat easier to find in the T205 set than in the T206 set. Except for the
32 subjects which I refer to as the "Exclusive 32". These T205 subjects were printed with the A - B - C - D pattern.
Here is an example from my Miller Huggins run.

The PIEDMONT FACTORY #42 cards in this group are difficult to find. In the past 7 years, I have found only 4 of these
32 guys with the PIEDMONT FACTORY #42 backs.

Re-visiting PIEDMONT 460 Fac. #42 cards....are there any more than 72 of them ?

A typical T205 back run comprises of 11 to 13 cards. Here is my complete run (11 cards) of Harry Wolter. Wolter was printed in the Exclusive 32 group.
This was my 1st T205 run that I completed. I have several other runs which are near completion. I am especially interested in NY Yankees players.
Note....Wolter was not printed with the PIEDMONT Factory #42 back.

My experience doing T205 runs has provided me an appreciation for the printing patterns of the T205's. Here are 2 major examples of these patterns:

1.... DRUM cards and HINDU cards are mutually-exclusive.

2.... the A - B - C - D cards and AMERICAN BEAUTY (Green) cards are mutually-exclusive.

Re-visiting PIEDMONT 460 Fac. #42 cards....are there any more than 72 of them ?

A NET54 "reader" emailed me regarding the T205 group, which I refer to as the "Exclusive 32".

I have confirmed that exactly 32 subjects (of the 208) in the T205 set were printed with the AMERICAN BEAUTY, BROAD LEAF, and CYCLE backs.
To date, 27 (of these 32) subjects in this group have been confirmed with DRUM. Eventually, I expect these five will be discovered with DRUM....

Continuing with the T206 runs....here's my Russ Ford run. Ford is included in the Exclusive 12 group. Each of the subjects in the Exclusive 12 group were printed
with 13 different backs. LENOX and PIEDMONT #42 were not printed with these 12 subjects. I still need the UZIT and EPDG backs to complete this run.

Trivia.....Russ Ford's rookie season record (26-6) in 1910 was quite a feat. Furthermore, he WON a total of 48 games in his 1st two seasons.

I still need the UZIT and EPDG backs to complete this run.

Hi John

The Check-list in Post #1507 simply lists the T205 subjects ("Exclusive 32") printed with the A - B - C -D pattern.
The AMERICAN BEAUTY, BROAD LEAF, and CYCLE backs have all been confirmed. Five DRUM backs (bold lettering)

Ted,

Your post in #1507 states this.

"I have confirmed that exactly 32 cards (of the 208) in the T205 set were printed with these four backs."

So you can see how someone reading your statement would think they have been confirmed and not merely believe they were printed.

John

Jack Quinn is another one of my T205 Yankees which was printed in the EXCLUSIVE 32 group. I only need one card to complete this run.
You guessed it.... it's the DRUM.
Furthermore, I need not search for a PIEDMONT #42 card of Quinn because it appears that HASSAN Factory #649 and PIEDMONT #42
are mutually-exclusive with respect to subjects in the EXCLUSIVE 32 group. And, I know his HASSAN Factory #649 card exists.*

Re-visiting PIEDMONT 460 Fac. #42 cards....are there any more than 72 of them ?

My favorite T205 is Miller Huggins. I have included him in my Yankees collection. Huggins had a keen eye for talent. As Manager of
the Yankees (1918), he persuaded Col. Jacob Ruppert (Yankees owner) to acquire Babe Ruth from Boston in 1919.

The T205 Huggins is one of the few guys in the Exclusive 32 group that was printed with the PIEDMONT Factory #42 back.

The DRUM back for Huggins has not yet been confirmed. However, since he was printed with the brown AMERICAN BEAUTY back, I
expect his DRUM card will eventually be discovered.

Furthermore, I also need a HASSAN Factory #30 to complete this run. If any of you have a HASSAN #30 Huggins for sale....please
email me..... tedzan11@comcast.net

Here is my Jack Quinn with the HASSAN Factory #649 back....that was missing in Post #1515.

Therefore, we can assume that Quinn does not exist with a PIEDMONT Factory #42 back. The HASSAN #649 and the
PIEDMONT Factory #42 are mutually-exclusive backs in the T205 group of cards which I refer to as the Exclusive 32.

I am one of the seemingly few pre-War collectors who is NOT a T206 affectionado. I do collect WaJo cards, and I do have this T206 Piedmont Factory 42 card of WaJo. However, I'm more interested in real-photo, black & white cards of WaJo, especially his 1916, 1917, and 1921-22 issues. I'm willing to trade my Piedy 42 for a black & white card of WaJo with a scarce ad back. A trade could be consummated at the Net54 dinner at the Chicago National.

Ted knows the 42's are near and dear to my heart. Being in NC I decided to collect these backs for both the T206 and T205 sets. One card I want to upgrade is the T205 Evers. If anyone has a 2 or better let me know.

I don't know of any new discoveries of 42's since the Tinker showed up a few years ago. I believe Ted had seen the card before but no picture had been taken. The same 4 culprits in the T206 set that were thought to be verified have yet to turn up. These names can be found in the T206 PD 42 set list.

Thanks Ted for bringing up these 42's once again.

Hey guys,

So far, we have only 23 different T206 subjects on display with PIEDMONT 460 Factory #42 backs in this thread.

I expected at least 36 of the known 72 subjects with this rare back would have been posted.

So, come on guys, let us put on a show here and post more of them. These elusive T206's add a certain amount of

Hi Ted - Are Frank Smith the players you are looking for?

molenick 08-18-2023 11:00 PM

This is a stretch because I am matching a first name to a last name but...

In 1910, Sherry Magee had his best season, leading the league in R, RBI, BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, TB, and WAR (most, but not all, of these categories were also career bests).

In 1959, Larry Sherry was the World Series MVP, going 2-0 for the Dodgers with an 0.71 ERA and saving the two games he did not win (he did not start a game but finished every game the Dodgers won).

I am not sure if these names "coincide" enough to be the answer Ted is looking for...if not, I will keep looking.

Edited to add: it turns out Sherry is not a "1950's Topps guy" since his first card was in 1960. So I will try again tomorrow.

Certain Bob "Dusty" Rhoades cards are considerably tougher to find than other common T-cards.

Net54 member, Rob McKenzie, has searched for many years for the 1910 COUPON Rhoades card to complete his 1910 COUPON set.

T3 set collectors will tell you that the Rhoades (arm extended) card is very, very difficult to find.

I think when Cleveland sent Rhoades to the Kansas City Blues (Feb 1910) American Lithographic subsequently stopped printing him.
