My red Cobb with a PIEDMONT #42 back is a real beauty; however, it's not an authentic T206.
But, that is fine with me, as it was very affordable. And, it certainly is a darn good reproduction. Whatever.....so let us see your PIEDMONT #42 red Cobb's. Well, not many anymore responses with PIEDMONT Factory #42 cards on display here.
In order to see some more PIEDMONT Factory #42 cards, here is a friendly bump, before this Post disappears off the front page. Hey guys, why not check-out your T206 (or T205) collections, you may be surprised to discover that you have some of these rare cards, but did not realize it. TED Z T206 Reference . |

I am one of the seemingly few pre-War collectors who is NOT a T206 affectionado. I do collect WaJo cards, and I do have this T206 Piedmont Factory 42 card of WaJo. However, I'm more interested in real-photo, black & white cards of WaJo, especially his 1916, 1917, and 1921-22 issues. I'm willing to trade my Piedy 42 for a black & white card of WaJo with a scarce ad back. A trade could be consummated at the Net54 dinner at the Chicago National.

Pd 42
Ted knows the 42's are near and dear to my heart. Being in NC I decided to collect these backs for both the T206 and T205 sets. One card I want to upgrade is the T205 Evers. If anyone has a 2 or better let me know.
I don't know of any new discoveries of 42's since the Tinker showed up a few years ago. I believe Ted had seen the card before but no picture had been taken. The same 4 culprits in the T206 set that were thought to be verified have yet to turn up. These names can be found in the T206 PD 42 set list. Thanks Ted for bringing up these 42's once again. |

Hey guys,
So far, we have only 23 different T206 subjects on display with PIEDMONT 460 Factory #42 backs in this thread. I expected at least 36 of the known 72 subjects with this rare back would have been posted. So, come on guys, let us put on a show here and post more of them. These elusive T206's add a certain amount of "sophistication" to our T-card collections. Especially some of the tougher ones (such as the above T206 Tinker). TED Z T206 Reference . |

Hi Ted - Are Frank Smith the players you are looking for?
|
This is a stretch because I am matching a first name to a last name but...
In 1910, Sherry Magee had his best season, leading the league in R, RBI, BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, TB, and WAR (most, but not all, of these categories were also career bests). In 1959, Larry Sherry was the World Series MVP, going 2-0 for the Dodgers with an 0.71 ERA and saving the two games he did not win (he did not start a game but finished every game the Dodgers won). I am not sure if these names "coincide" enough to be the answer Ted is looking for...if not, I will keep looking. Edited to add: it turns out Sherry is not a "1950's Topps guy" since his first card was in 1960. So I will try again tomorrow. |

Hi Chad
My mind gets so involved in my vintage cards that I've become forgetful regarding my 1950's stuff. I clearly remember the James "Dusty" Rhodes performance in the 1954 World Series. But, I forgot that he is the #1 card in the 1955 set. TED Z T206 Reference . |
TRIVIA.....the NAME's the SAME....a T206 guy "coincides" with 1950's TOPPS guy
Certain Bob "Dusty" Rhoades cards are considerably tougher to find than other common T-cards.
Net54 member, Rob McKenzie, has searched for many years for the 1910 COUPON Rhoades card to complete his 1910 COUPON set. T3 set collectors will tell you that the Rhoades (arm extended) card is very, very difficult to find. I think when Cleveland sent Rhoades to the Kansas City Blues (Feb 1910) American Lithographic subsequently stopped printing him. https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...tyRhoades2.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |

Thanks for the mention, Ted, yes, I am still looking for a T213-1 Rhoades hands at chest. If anyone has one to trade, let me know.
I am fortunate to have these 2 T206's, though. The BL350 has been changed by an earlier collector to a "Kansas City" card. |

UZIT This thread will provide references to major contributions posted on Net54 these past 14 years that have formed a better understanding of "The Monster" [as Bill Heitman so aptly coined his T206 book (circa 1980)]. Let's start with the 2005-2006 publication of Scot Reader's Inside T206 An excellent, very informative, and well written book that inspired many of us Net54ers to post our experiences and theory's regarding the complexities of the T206 series. One of the early and very significant T206 threads was posted in June 2006 by Barry Arnold, titled T206 EPDG- - - how rare in your collection ? This thread sparked lots of brainstorming among Net54ers regarding T206's. It included surveys; and, various aspects of the T206 series were explored.....resulting in 363 meaningful posts. Furthermore, between many of us Net54ers, this thread was...."the beginning of a beautiful friendship" (to quote Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca). In the Summer of 2006, Bill Brown posted his T206 Super-Set (excel) spreadsheet. Bill received 1000's of inputs from Net54ers for this spreadsheet. It was a great start in the pursuit of what a T206 "master" set would be comprised of....T206 Super-Set Sept 2007, I started a thread titled Joe Doyle NAT'L and it's 11 "cousins"....SURVEY to explore certain PIEDMONT 350 cards that I considered as rare as the Joe Doyle "error" card. I eventually referred to these particular T206's as the Elite 11 Subsequent posts in this thread will expand on theory's regarding the structure of the T206 series and the front/back permutations that have resulted. A fair number of the theory's presented on Net54 (since 2006) have withstood the test of time. Providing accurate lists of which front/back combos were printed. And, which ones are No-Prints. So, stay tuned......many more T206 "oldies but goodies" References and Reflections will be posted here. And, feel free to contribute any meaningful T206 stories, or experiences collecting T206's that you have. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ___________________________________ INDEX Set your user settings to display 50 posts per Page. Hi Rob If I recall correctly, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art has on display a complete 68-card 1910 COUPON set in their Sportscard department. Therefore, we do know the "Dusty" Rhoades card exists with a 1910 COUPON back....despite PSA's pop report data indicating none. You're very, very fortunate to have 67 cards in your 1910 COUPON set. It's an amazing accomplishment. Good Luck on eventually finding Rhoades. I embarked on this adventure approx. 20 years ago. After attaining 25 % of set, I gave up on it. Nice Coupons there...On Rhoades populations, as you say the MET has one online from Burdick...
www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/417937 Also, SGC's pop report shows 2 examples of Rhoades.. an SGC 3 and 1.5. GFG had a raw one that could be the SGC 1.5, or maybe it's still raw. I've had a lot of help from board members to get to 67. I still have lots of other want-lists going to keep me busy. |

Rob Speaking about Doolan....my Doolan has evidence that it was glued to the outside of the carton which contained approx. 200 cigarettes of this new T-brand. My contention is that 1910 COUPON cigarettes were never packaged in the standard "10-pack" format (as most of the Tobacco products of that time). Furthermore, it's my guess that the cards with no paper loss on their backs were simply inserted within these cartons of cigarettes. Quite a number of my 1910 COUPON cards have this typical paper loss on their backs since I was able to acquire them at less cost. How many of your cards have the paper loss problem ? http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...PONDoolanX.jpg . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...ONDoolanBx.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...poncobb50x.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...edCobb75xb.jpg TED Z x T206 Reference . |

Ted, I'm currently going through and scanning what I have for T213-1. I will get back to you on an exact count later this week. I have upgraded along the way, so most of my near set is free of back damage, but I have a lot of lower grade duplicates with all sorts of back damage. Here's a Mathewson with back damage.
I don't know very much about the origins or packing of Coupon cards, and would listen to all ideas about them. |
IMO the paper loss/addition and glue residue on some of the T213-1's is the same as what is seen on many of the cards from that era that were glued in scrap books.

Rob Whenever you report back is fine with me. I never get tired of our 1910 COUPON discussions. You and I really appreciate the complexity of this 68-card set. Ted Breitenstein is my favorite Southern Leaguer in this set. Ted pitched a "perfect" No-Hitter in his 1st Major League start, pitching for the St. Louis Browns (Oct. 4th, 1891). https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...350xCOUPON.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...50xCOUPONb.jpg One of my favorite Major Leaguers in this set is Miller Huggins. Ted, and any other Coupon collectors that would like to chime in, I counted 44/104 T213-1 with minor to major back damage. I have upgraded over the last 40 years, so if I have a nicer example, I don't add a new dupe with back damage. In other words, the percentage of Coupon 1's with back damage may be higher than 40%.
Here are 4 tougher cards that I do not have dupes for, and would like to upgrade, plus 4 examples of Fletcher. |

Your set and inventory of 1910 COUPON cards, with respect to back damage percentage, is comparable to that I have seen searching for these cards throughout the years. Good news, I had forgotten I upgraded Engle at Hunt 4 years ago.
In his encyclopedia, Lew Lipset said about T213-1, "It is doubtful that the set is complete at 68." It was in the 1980's and nothing new has surfaced. I'm guessing that is not still his belief. It would be fun to find a new T213-1, like Collins, Tris Speaker, or Bresnahan bat. |

I did not think this quiz would be this tough. Here is one more hint.....
He played BB for 14 years, on five different East Coast teams TED Z T206 Reference . |
Hmmm....this one's a tough one! As another guess, he's not a t206 player, but could it be Casey Stengel?
|
I was thinking that as well...but I thought it had to be a T206 player. Casey meets the other clues (14 years, five teams, high World Series batting average) and I know he hit the first home run in Ebbets Field (not sure what the other two stadiums are).
I see now that Ted never said it was a T206 player...but I guess since it was in the T206 thread I was not clear. |
I never noticed this before but the fact that there are several southern leaguers in the 213-1 (aka 1910) coupon set, really complicates the concept (now taboo?) of coupons being considered t206 cards and just a burdick classification mistake. It really seems to point to a completely unique way the creators conceived and built the coupon offering.

Hey guys,
You guessed the right guy.... CASEY STENGEL ....I knew you would. Casey hit the first home run in Ebbets Field (April 5, 1913). In the 1923 World Series vs the Yankees, Stengel’s inside-the-park HR in the ninth inning won Game One for McGraw’s Giants. This moment was immortalized, as it was the first HR in Yankee Stadium. You are very welcome. Casey Stengel fascinated me, when he became NY Yankees Manager in 1949. I was only 10 years old then. I could tell you many stories of how he led the Yankees to the five consecutive World Championships (1949 to 1953). Especially, when Johnny Mize single-handedly beat the Dodgers in the 1952 W.S. Furthermore, Don Larsen's PERFECT W.S. game in 1956. TED Z T206 Reference . |
