Default T206 Old Mill Portrait scarcity discussion.

I seem to remember that at one point there was a thread discussing the scarcity of Old Mill portraits, can someone point me to that thread? Or discuss below. Thanks in advance.

Luke would be a good person to chime in on this. One of the big factors is a lot of the portraits are print group 1 subjects and the majority of the low pop Old Mills are from print group 1.

Here are a couple of examples for comparison

Hooks Wiltse

Portrait no cap print group 1 PSA SGC pop = 9 Portrait with cap print group 4 PSA SGC pop = 55

McGraw

Portrait no cap print group 1 PSA SGC pop = 8 Portrait with cap print group 4 PSA SGC pop = 34

There is evidence that Old Mill was one of the last backs printed on the group 1 subjects and I think that is the reason many of them are low pop with Old Mill backs.

Rather than bumping the above thread that Robert linked here's a scan of a Merkle portrait Old Mill.

I'm skeptical of any other lists that claim Merkle (portrait) exists. Let's see if someone on this forum posts a scan of this card ?

If I remember correctly, one of the Bruces (if not both) really went after Archive once.

I love this type of information on the forum. And like many, I probably get a bit (selfishly) excited when realizing I may unknowingly own something that may be rarer than expected.

With that said, how do you really level-set whether something is more "special" than anticipated? I can easily look up Pop reports but that assumes those examples are or were at one point graded by said company.

For example, I have a Willis Port w/ Old Mill reverse. PSA shows a total of 4 for pop.

But, does that really fall into what one may determine a low production based on what was on the 'thatt206life.com' article or the previous archived threads in Net54? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Bill

Your Willis is a tough one. It's probably slightly more plentiful than average for 150-350 Old Mills. There are some incredibly rare poses and then also some that are quite plentiful. If you keep your eye out trying to find another, you may not see one for sale in the next year. Then again sometimes there are none for a given pose and then 3 show up in a month.
