Default February Pick Up Thread

Decided to start the 1947 Centennial Flour set. I will post more later. Not a big fan of the PSA holders for these cards but I really like the cards.

Those are cool. How big are they? I've never seen those. Yeah, I see the PSA holder has them all over the place, but they still show really nice. Tell me about those!

Phil: these were a west coast regional issued by Centennial Flour Mills. The Rainers played many years in the PCL and the cards were issued in 1943/44/45/46/47. The 1947 set was the largest issued with 32 cards. They measure 3 7/8 by 5 1/8 and are black and white. Sometimes these are listed as F340.

After a long week out of town, I was pretty happy coming back home to find this wickedly cool 1971 Fleer World Series Clemente card waiting for me...

Yeah, the argument “We just don’t have holders to fit that size” is more than a little tired now, decades later from the largest professional grader in the world. Your fees are high. Your turn times are ridiculous. You are under a cloud of suspicion from the PWCC mess. Maybe invest in making some proper sized holders for all cards?

So this one finally arrived today.
The "MK" is because of the smallest mark on the lower back corner of the card.

Default 1952 Topps Maurice McDermott

I wasn't around in 1952 so I looked up McDermott's bio. His wikipedia bio is pretty interesting. He won a 7 million dollar state lotto, discovered Mark McGwire and was one of Jack Kerouac's drinking buddies (I'm not saying this, I read it on the internet.) Anyway, adding another 52 to a mix from very poor to near mint...

Random. I've seen cards 5 or higher with all kinds of noticeable crap on the back that don't get the qualifier.

I know all about PWCC but I couldn't resist this one. I still think their lower grade cards are probably safe. Doesn't excuse their corruption. I'm conflicted. haha..

Nice 53 Mantle. Seems like those just keep climbing in price.

Before there was Doc Gooden, there was Dock Ellis...adding another fun 70's semi-star...

I love the Doc Ellis...I'm crossing Tony Perez off my list. Sanguillen & Roy White are on the menu but not likely soon.

A card I have wanted for a very, very long time. Finally found a mid-grade example I liked that was close enough to VCP to pull the trigger on a BIN. Hoot!

It’s probably also saying a lot that a Cubs fan of 31 years ponied up for this card...

John,

I always loved that pink Gibson rookie. I'm lucky to have secured one from a trading friend of mine a while back. He sent it to me as a random act of kindness and didn't expect anything in return, but I'm trying to pay him back little by little. I still owe him some more, but that's how it works sometimes.

Anyway, great pick up.

It's a really old holder, so that might account for their designation of 'print defect' (they seemed to have PD'ed way too many cards way back when). Who knows? There is a tiny bit of snow in the pics and a fisheye on Mike's hat,
but with a trio of beautifully sharp corners and a pretty sweet look all around, I'll take it...

Default February Pick Up Thread

Technically not new pickups, but the mailman with my SGC package just dropped these off about 10 minutes ago. Very stoked, mainly because these cards, which both used to be in PSA slabs - look sooo much better with the black SGC insert! The Williams was a 2.5 with PSA, and remained that way. Can’t say I disagree - it has some moderate creasing on the lower left side, but it is difficult to see, because they don’t break the paper anywhere. Very happy with the Johnson, which received a slight upgrade from a PSA 1.
