Default 1950s Bowman

I've mentioned this in a few prior posts, but after taking a break from the hobby for several years, I jumped back in several moths ago. I'm a Dodgers fan and those players are my primary focus.

When I got back into the hobby I wasn't sure what era I wanted to collect. Believe me, during the past several months I have bought a few modern and vintage cards, but I still wasn't sure.

I am very much attracted to the design of some modern cards, but found myself going back to the vintage cards.

After a lot of research and evaluating what made me feel good about collecting again, I decided this. I will collect some modern cards, but won't go crazy with the chase. As for vintage cards, although I will collect those that catch my eye, I plan to focus on cards from the 1950s Bowman sets. To me, these cards are simply beautiful.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to gain an appreciation for the combination of this decade and this brand, but better late than never.

Wish me luck.

When I first got back into collecting last year, the catalyst was deciding to get a low-mid grade '55 Bowman set. I just love the look of vintage TVs from my parents' era, and combining that with baseball made the choice easy.

I paid a little too much for it (not based on typical market prices for the set, but from the true break-up value of the cards). But even though that irks me some, I'm still glad I took that first plunge with it. Because that got me into finding so much more great stuff since. Not Bowman, but other '50s to '70s vintage.

Good luck with your quest. And when you're finding new cards on Ebay, I'd focus on auctions (buy it now prices are often really inferior). And when those tempting offers appear.....if feels like maybe you can do better on this or that '50s Bowman card, chances are that you can. A little patience and a little more groundwork often lead to better deals.

(that's a lesson I learned the hard way at first)

Yes, the 50's Bowmans are my favorite sets of all time.

The artwork on the 1950, 1951, and 1952 sets is beautiful. Little masterpieces. I'm 85% done building a 1952 Bowman set.

But if you prefer photography, then 1953 Bowman has it covered...another "work of art" set.

And since Bowman seems to be a little less popular with collectors than Topps, that means you can pick up stars and HOF cards at fairly reasonable prices compared to their Topps counterparts.

Default 1950 BOWMAN cards

In the Spring of 1950, I opened up my first pack of BOWMAN cards, and I still remember how thrilled I was to see these very colorful BB cards.
I recovered my original BB card collection many years ago and was surprised to find out that I had a near complete set of the 1950 BOWMAN's.
The last card I acquired was Ted Williams.

Good luck to you collecting these colorful "gems".

Beautiful cards and gems like these are the reason I decided to collect them.

Thanks for sharing.

Ah, the old Stromberg- Carlson console TV that literally anchored my family's living room in the mid-1950's. My face was glued to that screen for hours every weekend, but it wasn't images of Rudy Regalado that fixated me - never even knew what Rudy looked like. Maybe would have found out if he had been on the roster of a team that appeared on the NBC game of the week, but did not even find him in waxpacks that I ripped open at the corner Mom & Pop store that year. Instead, it was Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels duopolizing my Saturday afternoon attention in 1955.
