Default Do you contribute or lurk on the CU Message Board as well?

Posted By: DJ

Okay, I'm not a "PSA" person. I have only lurked a few times on the "CU" board and actually found the experience nauseating to be honest with you. It's not my thing.

The thing I enjoy about this Forum is it's structure, it's unbiased opinions, the fact that there are threads about 1989 Score Football and 1976 Topps Baseball in the "Vintage Section" and the very intelligent core that make up the Forum. There is no senseless banter (well very limited and amusing) and no moronic graphics by our id's that flash. I also hate the "if you say anything bad about PSA, you will be banned" philosphy which comes with Big Brother owning the site.

I.E: LOL....The SGC registry is a joke and if some retard is willing to crossover a decent collection to SGC they are committing investment suicide, have you seen the ending prices on SGC and GAI graded cards? Not to mention the shear expense of crossing over the cards?

What follows is a 'PSA is great, everyone else sucks' mantra.

I would like to know how many of you VBC Forum contributors also contribute or lurk on that CU site? Just curious.

On another note...Well, it looks like Adam finally got his T206 Red Ty Cobb. Not a PSA 2 or 3, but a 1 according to the Collectors Universe Message Board. He used the word "AWESOME" to describe the card. Be prepared for that call in twenty years Mr. Lifson!

I sometimes lurk but quite frankly cant read for too long without giving myself a headache. Most posters over there have no idea what they are talking about. The sgc post is a good example - it may be technically correct with modern cards. Vintage, I'd say sgc and psa are fairly close with most issues. I cross most my cards to sgc - the holders are far superior to psa IMO. Am I committing investment suicide? No - if I ever feel like my return will be that much greater if I need to sell a card, I will spend the $10 and cross it back - fortunately, I dont feel like that is necessary. The PSAers also conveniently ignore the fact that modern cards in BGS slabs routinely outsell their psa slabbed counterparts. I think there was actually a post over there once arguing that a 52 topps mantle was a better investment than a T206 wagner. Ah, ok.

DJ,

I do read and post on the CU board. I find it a nice compliment to this one. I really love this board for its structure and focus and enjoy some of the "looseness" of the CU board. No real opinions on PSA versus SGC. It seems to me that SGC is every bit as tough as PSA and more knowledgeable on pre-war cards, but as you said from an investment angle PSA has the upper hand. I wouldn't hesitate buying SGC cards though. GAI I am still trying to decide. I wish more people felt the same way on did on the two boards though. A person can like both. It doesn't have to be Chevy vs. Ford or Coke vs. Pepsi. Just my two cents.

Damian

I don't know anything about any other issues, but in the Goudeys, PSA dominates as far as price. I would defer to anyone else on this board when it comes to other vintage issues, but the Goudeys, PSA prices are much higher.

Here's the perfect example:

1934 Goudey Don Hurst SGC 92: $338 on ebay
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=86844&item=5202568299</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=86844&item=5202568299</a>

A different 34 Goudey Donr Hurst PSA 8: Currently on auction at Memory Lane, current bid is $1,111 (not including the buyer's premium):
<a href="http://www.memorylaneinc.com/site/bid/bidplace.asp?itemid=542</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.memorylaneinc.com/site/bid/bidplace.asp?itemid=542</a>

Memory Lane is likely to get a higher price for the same card than an unknown seller on ebay (even those with great feedback), but not this much.

csmoking,

The point of this thread wasn't whether SGC was better than PSA. The thread was whether people utilized both Boards. I hope this doesn't turn into a PSA/SGC debate. That's been argued to death in the past.

DJ - you're right. Sorry about that, I was just responding to someone else's comment.

As for the CU boards, I'm actually surprised there is a decent amount of bashing of PSA there. Much more than I would expect. Of course, there are even more of GAI and SGC, but that's kinda expected since it is PSA's board. But the fact that so many write "buy the card, not the holder", even there - that says something good about some of the posters.

As far as vintage posters, almost non-existent. Nothing rivals this board.

Absolutely nothing against CMOKING on this one because we have all gotten off topic in a thread before but I agree. Let's do stay on topic for the most part. As for the CU board I have looked at it a few times but it really doesn't interest me that much. They aren't as hard core pre-wwII as we are ..... and probably don't care to be. I am sure there are lot's of folks that enjoy it though. I have even seen my name mentioned over there before. I guess I should feel honored....

CMOKING- we posted at the same time....we agree again and thanks for understanding

I read all the card boards. I used to post frequently at CU, but I've been posting over at SGC for a couple of weeks now. No disrespect meant to CU, but there's an awful lot of drivel there that's tough to sort through. I only post over there very occasionally, when I just can't help myself.

I don't post there, but I have always wondered....What is the better investment, a 1986 W. Palm Beach Randy Johnson PSA 10 or a 1992 Derek Jeter Front Row Promo PSA 10?

I've been banned from the CU boards, so I don't bother even lurking there anymore. I can't even remeber why I got banned, but it was for taking PSA to task for something stupid they did and refused to admit to it.

....someone will post a link to something that was said on the CU board. But I have never traveled there on my own. I have had all of my T206 PSA cards crossed over to SGC, and so I have no interest in anything PSA-related.

I've never been there and probably never will be.

When one's main focus is vintage cards, there's not much of a reason to go there for vintage information when this board exists.
