Picked this one up at the Pasadena City College Flea Market.

Any thoughts on value?

I can’t say I’ve ever seen this before. I’ve seen this design but I believe for other teams and years. It’s not my cup of tea - I think it’s an Ad Flag? - but still objectively very very nice.

LA Dodgers pennants seem to underperform on eBay for some reason. But it’s rare enough that a LAD-only collector might splurge. I’d put this in the neighborhood of $175-250, possibly more. If it was SF Giants dated 1962? Make it a grand …

Come to think of it, that ‘63 Dodgers might be WGN …. Kyle?

$200 - $250. One of the rarest/most sought after/best Dodgers Champs pennants from their time in LA. Pretty rare to find it with red felt… also was made in blue, green, burgundy and black.

Ricky: your pennant's by ADFLAG. And, it's quite rare. You scored a nice pick-up, for sure!

More commonly, this design was used on ADFLAG's 1959 NL champs pennants, of which they made three variants. They also made a WS champs pennant, that year, based upon the same design; and it is EXTREMELY rare.

When 1963 came around, it appears ADFLAG recycled most of the 1959 design and updated it for that year's series. They made three variants in 1963, all of which feature the inclusion of 1st base coach, Leo Durocher, which was certainly unusual.

I actually made a reproduction of this very pennant and you can read all about it (and the above variants from '59 and '63) here:

https://pennantfactory.weebly.com/bl...champs-pennant

Thanks for sharing!

Anyone notice that STL Cardinals pennant that closed on eBay today? Holy mackerel. The Cardinals are like the GB Packers of MLB pennants. Another one with a torn tip also blew up …

Picked up these unusual football pennants recently. They have an ASCO mark, but no NFL mark. Seems strange. They are 3/4 size. There was also a 49ers pennant (which I why I bought the lot).

I really liked this one...the cowboy boots, the 10 gallon hat, the crossed bats for the "X", etc. Even with the staining, it got a pretty good price.

It might be the only good (non generic) Texas Rangers pennant ever made. I think I’ve seen one other variation, but it was so long ago, the memory is fuzzy.

I was surprised it hit the price it did. I've see nicer ones sell for less. Timing is everything.

Default New content just posted: Salem Screen Printers

I just posted a new piece on Pennant Fever covering a short-lived 20th century pennant maker we've never really discussed; and I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on it. This month, we'll take a look at Salem Screen Printers, a New England company more known for their shirts and sportswear; however, during the late 1980s/early 1990s, they made a few pennants I'm sure we've all seen that, in my opinion, warrant some recognition among us pennant collectors today.

See: https://pennantfever.weebly.com/

Also, I've posted new content on my other site: Pennant Factory. There you'll find some interesting material on "caricature pennants"; and the much discussed "grommet pennant" we've all been mystified by.

See: https://pennantfactory.weebly.com/

Whatever you decide to read, I hope you enjoy it.

Next company on deck: The Reproduction Co. of Brooklyn, NY.

Great articles Kyle. I particularly liked the grommet pennants. I'm probably slow on the uptake but it never occurred to me that the grommets were a way to lower cost and reduce sewing. Thanks.

As it's been a bit slow on this thread lately, here's an update on the pennants in post #6529. I gave them a bit of a clean and they tidied up well.

Thought I’d give a little push to the thread … my buying has really slowed down but this was something on my wish list, as I already had the “sister” Browns pennant. These are clearly WGNs.

Also adding a few pics to push the feed along. Seems like the market is slow for everyone. Here are two additions for me over the last handful of months.

Really did not need to see that one again, Greg. I gave it a good shot with a Best Offer, but you obviously bested me. Congrats... it actually looks incredible next to the matching Browns Pennant. It definitely found the right home!

Awesome pickups, Erik. Never seen that particular Tigers variation, and the Chiefs is such a toughie... especially in nice condition like yours. Great scores!

Decided to get more of my pennants out of the closet, so I bought these two sets of shelves that function as both display and storage.

Thanks, guys. Hopefully I'll have a few new pennants to post soon.

And St. Mary's was/is Santa Clara's rival, but I have to give respect to the Domer pennant find from which it came : ) There are a bunch of Houston Olilers and Astros pennants beneath that one St. Mary's pennant. The Santa Clara pennant from that find is framed and hanging elsewhere.

I sort of feel bad that there doesn't seem to be a St. Mary's collector with whom I can battle. I think Fballguy has more St. Mary's pennants than anyone I know, including a really cool early football pennant he picked up in the past year or so and a cool pink runner (St. Mary's wore pink uniforms for a few years). Feel free to post those, Rob.

And nice 1970 Super Bowl pennant, Erik.

Yeah, it must really suck to be able to get what you want with no competition.

Well, I don't really want St. Mary's stuff. It would be like you having Dodgers stuff (if there were no dodgers collectors and you just wanted to have some stuff from your rival around).

There is a bit of competition for Santa Clara stuff. But nothing like the Giants or 49ers.

My bad….I read that as there is no Santa Clara competition.

You’ll see it when it arrives . I never like to part with a pennant, but the one I sent Marc is pretty much a duplicate for me. Not quite, but close enough.

You find some great stuff, Gary! Phil Rizzuto had his own pennant? Who knew?

You'd think, with all the effort to do a pretty good job in making this look almost passable, they would've take more care to use an authentic spine. I've seen this style of Packers pennant a hundred times. I think I have two of them. And I've never seen a spine on them that looked like that.

That's scary good for a repro, and a copout by Jonsstats, who surely knows better. "I WILL LET THE BIDDERS DECIDE EXACTLY WHAT THIS IS." In other words, "I have sold 87,000 items and bidders rely on my expertise, but in this case I'm claiming ignorance because it good enough to get substantial bidding." BS, that's all.

Are there other Yankees with this pennant? If not, why in the world Rizzuto? As good as he was, he was never more than the fourth or fifth best player on his teams. What's the year on this, do you think?

+1. Just be honest and forthright. Your reputation is worth far more than a few extra bucks.

Early 1950s. Perhaps they were honoring Rizzuto for something at Yankee Stadium on that particular day. It is legit, and I have seen a few over the years. That one looks like it came from Hunt Auctions' recent I/P event.

Granted, Rizzuto was never their biggest star, and no other specific Yankee players have surfaced. It's just one of those one-offs that seem to remain a mystery. The Tigers had a similar pennant that commemorates Johnny Groth, of all people... who is way more obscure than Rizzuto!

Co-signed. If something is not authentic or original, just say so.

Speaking of Groth … that weird 1960 WGN Pirates pennant with the misspellings and “Groth” instead of “Groat” just sold on eBay. The pennant you refer to is also WGN and Groat is from Chicago and his father was an electrotype salesman. May have done business with the company!

Actually, this is no repro and I shouldn't have referred to it as such. It's an out-and-out fake, intended to deceive, with cracked paint, wool, and all. Best fake pennant I've ever seen, wrong spine notwithstanding, and if whoever made this gets more active, it could prove disruptive and lead to the slabbing and grading of pennants.
