Default What is a "workman style glove"?

Posted By: runscott

I see this phrase used a lot, so thought I'd call on the glove experts on the board to explain it. Here's an example of the term in use, from Scott Gaynor (thought I'd use an example that is most likely to be using the term correctly):

It is a glove used in the late 19th century through the 1st decade of the 20th century that had no webbing between fingers, or at the most a small piece of 1'' leather between the thumb and index finger. They were typically very small and just covered the hand. All are kind of tough to find. There are several types, some very rare, some not so rare.

I am almost certain I saw that same glove go for about $850 on ebay two months ago - odd that it's back up with no reserve.

I've seen several gloves similar to the one on ebay in the past few years. I think the consensus is that it is an old handball glove. A true 'tornado palm' vintage baseball glove would probably fetch a few thousand dollars.

As for the workmans type glove, those without any webbing between the thumb and index finger are much harder to find (and afford) .
