Default Scan Ownership

Posted By: identify7

My collection is not yet complete. Actually I have completed no subdivision of my collection.

I would like to "finalize" my decisions on the specific cards which I plan to include by printing out and manually assembling each subset. I guess I could do this without printing these cards out, if I was more computer proficient than I am.

My question is: can I take card scans from anywhere and everywhere without permission for this type of use, or do I need to seek the approval of each scan owner? And is there the existence of ownership applicable to scans on the internet, or are all of the pictures here in the public domain?

...but in most any auction, if you right click on your mouse on a pic, you can save the picture...I shamelessly save all the scans I like, usually with the name of owner attached.

If you post on your website a scan of an original drawing your drew or a snapshot of your kitty cat, no one can copy it or use it elsewhere without your permission.

If you post a scan on your website of something that is in the public domain, like the the Mona Lisa, you don't own the image. If anyone owns special rights to the image of the T206 Christy Mathewson baseball card, it would probably be the Mathewson estate, Major League Baseball and SF Giants, not a website owner who bought one of the cards on eBay.

some uses of even protected materials are expressly sanctioned by the law under the fair use doctrine. Good examples are images used in price guides.
