Do girls collect baseball cards?

I was reading a story in my Beckett about how baseball players are guys. It said that guys collect baseball cards. What I want to know if girls collect baseball cards? Why wouldn't they?

The last three boys I've met, ages six and up, they all collected baseball cards. It made me wonder if the common story that boys today don't collect baseball cards is a myth. I gave two of them, brothers visiting from New York State, a box of baseball cards. I asked them if they wanted some football or basketball cards included, and they said they only wanted baseball.

Paul, to try to answer the actual question that you posed, I would have to say that females generally do not collect baseball cards. Of course, there are some very ardent female baseball card collectors. I know Joann posts here regularly and is a terrific collector.

But if you go to shows or even talk to most collectors, I think you will find that the baseball card collector (modern or vintage) is overwhelmingly male.

I have two nieces that collect casually. My nephews are more into hunting and cars, not sports.

I don't know that a whole lot of any kids collect anymore. I only know one 12-year old boy that collects, but he is fanatic about it.

I think that if collecting cards continues as a hobby for kids, the gender mix will balance out a bit. It seems clear to me that more women are becoming sports fans in general - look at game attendance, Super Bowl parties, NCAA bracket pools, and girls sports teams in all sports. Still predominantly male, but more women involved with all than there used to be even 10 years ago. Give the trend another 10 years or so and I think the mix of sports fans between boys and girls will be more even. It might be more tennis and soccer versus baseball and football, but the overall interest will be there.

that could become very interesting, because:
1) It is reasonable to assume that the number of boys who collect will remain the same, or go up. No reason to point to it dropping in the future...
and
2) If the fan interest and active participation rates continue to increase amongst girls & women, and these things lead to collecting in any meaningful way, then that would mean that there could be significant growth in the collecting hobby for the years ahead! -No?

My 5-year-old daughter collects cards/memorabilia of her favorite players with the local AA team (Montgomery Biscuits...Southern League AA franchise of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays). Between posters, balls, hats, cards, tickets, etc, she's got well over 100 autos and a couple of hundred cards. Yeah, I know, its all new and shiny stuff, but its a start!

My wife collected cards of her favorite players back in the 90s, but doesn't any more. She does, however, support my collection wholeheartedly. For our last anniversary she got me a stunning PSA 6 1968 Nolan Ryan rookie that I'm thinking of cracking and sending to SGC and for my last birthday a nice PSA 3 T206 Tolstoi Mathewson dark cap.

My girlfriend has a small collection of modern cards. She's a fan of Aaron Miles because that would have been her name if she had been a boy. She also is a big Cardinals fan, even though I sometimes put one of my Cubs hats on her while she's not looking. I haven't converted her yet.

Geez, boys...there are a FEW women out there who are more into collecting baseball cards [and boxing cards, football cards, non-sports cards, and a whole lotta other cards] than they are shoes. [Okay, okay, so I still like my shoes...but those currently number at about fifteen pairs, but I couldn't even guestimate the number of cards and assorted other collecti-crapola taking up residence in several closets and 1/2 a room.]

My Daughter's, when they were "teeny-boppers" in the late '70s collected BB cards and renewed my
interest in BB cards.

Now, my wife doesn't collect BB cards, but I'm fortunate in that she collects a lot of other goodies.
And therefore, fully appreciates my Sportscard "addiction".
