Default Any Police Gazette Supplement collectors out there?

Was roaming around Old Cardboard's web site, as I some times do, and started looking at the M128 Police Gazette Supplements checklist. Admittedly, this is an issue that I very very unfamiliar with.

Anyway, I see that the August 12, 1905 issue contained a 1905 Pittsburg Team supplement. That's about 5 weeks after George Gibson made his debut with the Pirates. I'm curious whether or not he's in the picture.

Any chance somebody out there has a scan of that supplement?

And while I have your attention, if you own any M128 that you want to share, please do!

Thanks!

Richard.

I don't collect them but have 2...and hope to acquire at least the Matty in the future. Here they are with their 1915 W-Unc cards also. This Thorpe M128 is in a full magazine. (Scans aren't to size and each of the M128s and cards are their respective same size)

Nice Matty rookie!!

There was one that sold recently on eBay w/o the Police Gazette on top. Went for well more than I expected.

I hope to own one some day as well.

Richard,
I have the 1905 Pirates supplement, but there are no IDs printed on it and my scanner is too small to capture the image. I tried to emulate Mark Fimoff, but I can't be certain Gibson is among the 16 players pictured. I recognize most of the usual subjects (Wagner, Clarke, Leach, Phillippe, even Heine Peitz, but there are a couple of guys who "could" be Gibson.

I thought I would snag it for $1,500 (opening at $1k), but 2nd bid jumped to $4,050 a day before ending and it stayed there. It was perfect and framed beautifully. It was either once in Yeakley'a possession or the description had been stolen from an example on Amazon.

Apparently only a few examples exist w/o the supplement line at top.

Now I see it. Well, FWIW, I bought mine off eBay for $1.29 (shipping was $14 ) so I'm happy with what I paid for mine.

There were blank back Police Gazette Supplements and also same-style and full page size pictures printed in the magazine. The latter have page numbers at the top and text on back. I had the different kinds a while back and, while I assume the blank backs were the more valuable, had no trouble selling the magazine pages. They both look essentially the same graphics wise from the front.

This is a great set and very underrated imo...I do not collect them myself but have seen them come up quite a bit and at very affordable prices. I do however collect the 19th century Police Gazette supplements.

Greg, that Matty is amazing! I have never seen that one before.

Thanks for all of the great responses, guys. It's cool to see all of the great examples of this issue.

And Bob, thanks for the info. I'm guessing Gibson is not in the photo *because* it's so close to his debut, but I'm going to hold out hope until I see a scan. That he's not easily identifiable will help temper my expectations

Cheers,

Richard.

I have 87 different supplements, and dozens of full pages and covers with baseball content. Unfortunately, the 1905 Pittsburgh team is one of the ones I do not have. Want to sell me yours Bob?

I'm always looking for stuff that I don't have.

Here is my most recent PG pickup, from May 17, 1884 :

PS - there are two different Matty supplements. The one that Greg posted is from 1901, here's mine from 1911 :

Yep sorry, August 10, 1901, that was a typo in my post (that I have now corrected).

Default Gibson?

Here's a photo of a portion of the 1905 Pirates supplement. The guy next to Wagner looks like a possible young Gibson. What do you think?

How were the PG Supplements originally distributed? Were they a loose insert in the newspaper? All of my PG's are full of hot chicks and boxers. I did find this great centerfold in June 27, 1908 issue with Giants and Cubs about to take "centre stage". Little did they know how big the stage would be at the end of the season.

It's possible, but my gut says no. Any 1905-ish photo I've seen of Gibson has a much rounder face. Kinda baby-faced, even though Gibson was 25 in 1905. The guy next to Wagner in that photo has a skinnier face, I think.

Richard.

Hey Kenny, what's the date on that Wheat?

PG often used the same picture in different issues. This one is Sept 21, 1918 :

Another one as in a duplicate, or as in another date? If you have a duplicate I would be interested in taking one of them off your hands.

Since my hobby seems to be dredging up long dormant threads...

I am attempting to put together the complete set of m128 Police Gazette supplements, and with only 15 to go, it's been pretty slow lately.

However, I picked up a Leon Ames that is different from the Leon Ames that I already have. Credit to Brockelman Auctions for giving me the chance.

The one I picked up isn't dated or numbered, which isn't completely unique for the set (George Davis, and the first Mathewson aren't either), but this is the first time that I have found a "variation" in the set.

Has anybody else noticed this before? Does anybody HAVE any others that aren't dated or numbered?

Doug

Hey Richard,

Here is a scan of the Pittsburg team 1905 N128 Police Gazette Supplement.
I have had this for a number of years & had it framed.
Don't know about George Gibson, but hope this helps.

Default Gibson not in Police Gazette Supplement

Looking at the Police Gazette Supplement, George Gibson is not present. I do, however, see catcher Heinie Peitz with his arms folded in the back row 2nd player in on the right.

My only Police Gazette Supplement is this trimmed and stained WaJo, but I'm glad to have it:

Trimmed and stained means somebody loved it at a point prior to you loving it.

Hey Paul,

Not sure how I missed this for over a month, but thanks for posting the full scan. It's the first time I've seen the entire supplement at once.

And I agree with Patrick, definitely no Gibson in the picture. Too bad, as that would have been super cool, but after all these years (I see that I started this thread in 2013!) I'm glad to finally know for sure.

Richard.

I've got a few supplements I can't seem to find images of: Harry Harris, a boxing HOFer with no cards, and Terry McGovern, another HOFer from the turn of the (last) century. Only one I have scanned is this one:

Memphis Pal Moore, another HOFer.

I've also got a full page of Duke Kahanamoku somewhere, but no image of that either.

They're a little too big for my collecting tastes.

Does anyone collect the smaller images from the magazine itself? They are often the same image as a supplement or a full pager, just, er, smaller. For boxing, at least, they are a good source of collectible images of fighters with nothing else.

I recently made quite the score.

Quality isn't the greatest, but those of you who collect them know that sometimes you take what you can get.

Only need 6 more... (thanx Jon)

Default Any Police Gazette Supplement collectors out there?

This is my only supplement from The National Police Gazette. Has Wagner and Cy Young. From 1904 with what I believe is Gibson front and center for the Pirates team photo.

Oh man, you had me going for a moment, but if the supplement is from 1904, then it's too early. The Pirates didn't purchase Gibson's contract until June, 1905. If memory serves, in January of 1904 he was still technically with Buffalo, having not yet even been traded/sold/lent to Montreal yet.

Thinking about it now, though, those pictures must be the 1903 World Series teams, eh? That's actually even cooler. Thanks for sharing it!

Richard.
