Given Patrick's good idea for a Grand Slam thread, here's another to post our cards. The idea is to represent Cobb/Wagner/Ruth/Johnson/Mathewson each with a type card from your collection.

Hal, the least you could do is show some cards that are actually in decent shape. What's all that garbage?

Beautiful cards, Hal!

I definately like the big bordered cards like the Plows and Star Players, but when they add some ornateness, like on the Spalding, it seems to detract from the overall appearance. imo.

I only have one of these, a Willards, but Id like some more.

Thanks for not including a Ruth Buzzi, Hal.

Screw Cobb. The rest of these guys all won World Series rings. Each of these is my favorite image of the player of any card they appear on except for Johnson, which I like due to the rarity of the issue and the fact that it's Cuban. The Ruth image does appear on his E220 card, but on the exhibit they airbrushed out the stands in the background, which really makes Ruth stand out, and the quality of the image on the exhibit is infinitely better.

"Welcome to Bottom of the Ninth! We are dealers of vintage sports and non-sports trading cards, specializing in collector grade pre-war cards. All of our inventory is graded by reputable grading services such as PSA (Professional Sports Authenticators), SGC (Sportscard Guaranty) and GAI (Global Authentication Inc.). Have a look around and let us know if you see anything that interests you."

Never in my life have I seen someone operate a business selling worthless things to people for huge sums of money... and then COMPLAINING when the buyers are proud of the things they bought and want to share them with others.

One would think that such a seller would encourage this.

I am at a loss for why any such seller would discourage it with such venom. Completely illogical.

If I was even a threat of being a "rival" seller, one could perhaps see the reason for this attack.

But everyone here knows that this is not the case.

I must have MISSED the disclaimer on the "Bottom of the Ninth" webpage in fine print:

*If you buy any of our fine cards, you are required to never tell anyone about them, and you must continue to allow me to post my items for sale while you sit idly by keeping all of your cards a secret.

wow, I got to say that the attack on Hal's collection seems a bit uncalled for. he contributes a hell of a lot to this board and if he wants to show us his cards or show off his cards, its fine be me. first, I enjoy seeing them; and second, lets be honest - ALL of us who are posting in these threads are doing it because we want to show off our cards.

If that really is your interpretation of my posts then you are even more self-absorbed than originally thought.

Peter - Im referring to those of us who post pics. Frankly, I dont see why everyone thinks showing off your cards is a bad thing - I consider it more like sharing. I for one like seeing (and drooling over) cards that I see on this board. I also enjoy getting an idea what fellow collectors collect.

Josh,

I am not attacking Hal's collection. His collection is absolutely awesome. Most who post on this board know that Hal has a website. I am far from the only person on this board who finds that Hal boasts, not posts. I will probably be the only person to say something though. Just today Hal posted the same images in two different threads. Images of cards that he posts routinely and in many instances end up hijacking a thread. Hal and I had private emails about this earlier this year.

There are other board members and lurkers who have as impressive and maybe more impressive collections than Hal and sadly never post images but remain very unassuming.

Sorry if I have pissed off those of you who feel I am out of line.

Greg

Mr. Hal,
That series of loud bangs you heard was jaws dropping on the floor from the East Coast to Honolulu upon viewing the two "Grand Slam" threads. Your cards are things of glorious beauty; it made my day to see them one after another and I thank you for that.
Peace.

Let's face it: Hal has too many great cards. But..what does "someone around here etc." have to do with that?

Hi Andrew
Yes! The D304 Matty and her note arrived yesterday. I will e-mail you later tonight; six pm here, have a Karate class in an hour, gotta jam.
Now back to our regularly scheduled quarreling . . .

Greg,

I understand where everyone is coming from on this and that some may like the posts and some dont. I just wanted to give my .02. I also know that a lot of collectors, posters and lurkers dont share their collections. Personally, I think that is too bad - I for one would love to see them.

I would guess that Ryan's Matty is an uncataloged strip card from the mid 19 teens. I don't think Matty slipped into any of the Sporting News, Am Caramels, or baking issues that used that same design. They came just a wee bit later.

I didn't want to repeat types of cards, I actually have a nice m116 Mathewson, but since my only Wagner card is also a m116, I elected to show the t205 Mathewson (which I personally do not like that image). My portrait Walter Johnson t206 is also my favorite card of him, but since I was using the t206 Cobb, I went with the CJ Johnson (so as not to have 2 t206's represented). Here's my effort:

OK, I am a bit scanner challenged. My settings work great for EBay, but I can't seem to master the settings for the forum. I'll take em down if I can't get the size corrected.

Use Image Shack

It allows you to post and it has a box that you can use to automatically reduce the size of your posts. Shoot me an email if you have any questions how to use it.

No, the Matty isn't a strip card. It's from the same issuer as the M101-4 & M101-5 sets (Felix Mendelsohn) and was from a set that was supposed to be issued in 1917, but never was. Here's a link to a recent article in SCD about the issue:

Thanks. The Ruth is my most charished card in my collection. It's not as nice as Hal's PSA 7 shown in this thread, but still the pride of my collection.
