Default Cap Anson Cartoon Questions

Hi-

I recently acquired the poster/print shown below of a Cap Anson cartoon. It is a cartoon from the late 1880s that appeared in the Chicago Tribune. Mine is blank backed and is roughly 15 inches tall and 10.5 inches wide. I tried a Google search for Cap Anson cartoon and found two images of this online. One is on a site titled A Pictorial Chronology of Baseball in the 19th Century (part 13) by John Thorn and the second is on Cycleback.com 1800s prints site. That one is titled as a printing plate from 1886.

Can anyone provide any additional information about this item? Does it date to the late 1880s or was it made later? Was it given out by the newspaper? Any additional information is greatly appreciated.

Alan

Default Cap Anson Cartoon Questions

Hi Alan,

I mentioned the cartoon in the following article

https://www.tuffstuff.com/news/baseb...ting_cap_anson

It was drawn by future Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist John McCutcheon in the mid-1890s.

Cordially,
Howard W. Rosenberg

If you want my offhand, gut reaction: I assume it's period late 1800s.

Thank you both! Howard, that was a fantastic article to read, thank you for both writing it and sharing it. Thank you also for the more precise dating. David, thank you for your thoughts on the age as well as your many informative posts and excellent site. I am hoping it is from the period and does have a vintage feel but I always want to be as certain as possible.

Alan
