Default Mystery.. what is this??

I just noticed this weird, reverse faint imprint on the back of a recent Jimmie Foxx addition…. Wondering if anyone has an idea what this might be?

Even cooler (to me) would be to know what that imprint might actually say!

Looks like 2 cards might have been back to back a little too tightly for a long stretch of time and it somehow imprinted on the Foxx? Or do you think it’s just a printing flaw from the original print?

Have never seen something like this (though I only have 2-3 from this set so I’m hardly an experienced eye)

Appreciate your thoughts - just curious….

Jeff

Wet ink transfer. Usually imprinted on the back when sheets were stacked in the factory.

Sometimes they can be pretty extreme and are pretty neat.

Possibly wet ink transfer from another sheet as it says Jimmy Foxx backwards.

It's "Jimmy Foxx" backwards. Some people say it's bleedthrough, most people say it's wet sheet transfer from stacking before the sheets were dry. Very common for Goudey cards.

Yeah the bleed through crowd always amused me. Goudey is possibly the thickest card ever made. Also if it's "bleed through" then if you skinned the card that color would appear throughout all the layers. Clearly that's not the case. Wet sheet (or cylinder) transfer. Usually the red "BIG LEAGUE CHEWING GUM" bar is the most striking at the bottom.

Awesome… thx for the quick reply and lesson. (Not that it matters, but I assume this detracts from the grade of the card a bit?)

In my experience, most times, it doesn't detract from the grade.

Definitely a wet ink transfer. 1933 Goudey cards with red backgrounds are frequently seen with red on the back.

I would be curious if anyone has seen a similar printing oddity...this Luque has non-reversed print on the front. I have shown it before, but always worth peeking at again.
