Default Advice on purchasing t206 raw, Rube Waddell

Hello all

I came across a raw t206 Rube Waddell portrait at the national from a seller that I don’t know. His other cards for sale were all from the same era and most were graded, very nice items and he seemed legit.

But I wanted to ask if more experienced t206 collectors could offer opinions on this card (sorry, not the best images) - it’s a very pretty card and his asking price is $700.

He did say that the back has a minor eraser mark from what may have been a pencil mark removed - but not sure it would be picked up in grading since it’s so subtle

Would appreciate input and advice before I pull the trigger - am leaning toward no but it really is a beauty of a card front, so I am tempted

Thx for your advice

Jeff

Great looking Rube but I believe $700 is a steep ask for the card in it's condition.

Jeff, here's my 2 cents. T206 Waddell's are not very difficult. Its not a card that you have to have today or you'll never find it again. Now onto that particular card, it is in a card saver with the voided imprint which tells me someone else (Beckett raw card review?) has looked at it. Why did the dealer remove that label? Knowing the dealer already said it has an erasure mark, I'd bet that was caught and the card didn't have a numeric grade. And if the dealer can tell there is an erasure mark, you better believe any TPG should also catch it and grade it accordingly. While it is definitely a very nice looking card, it is pretty common and I would personally hold out for one that is less questionable unless I was getting a really good deal on it.

Do you have the dealer table number? You could also post that to see if someone else is more familiar with the seller and can give input on them. Keep in mind someone else might swoop in and buy it first if you do post that info.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the show!

I can see the temptation - big fat borders, centered nicely...

The only thing missing for that price range is the plastic everyone wants that gives it "legitimacy" in this new age world of collecting.

What happens if for some reason or other a TPG dumps the "A" on it for some reason or other? Then what's it worth?

Bottom line is if you really like it that much...

I was tempted to buy raw HOFers a few times at the show. my advice is do not pay graded prices for raw cards no matter what. An appealing PSA 3 sold for $840 in May. And given what 2s look like these days, I am sure you can a find a graded beauty in the $700 range.

the biggest dealer scam going is to 'eye out' a grade on a raw card and sell it for a graded price. of course, this saves all the time, hassle, and risk of trimming.

Really nice looking card with such a bold, in focus image. It looks like the erasure on the back was along the top border. Being that it is the last day of the show, the seller may be more willing to negotiate, and if you are feeling it, perhaps you can score the card with a lower offer.
