Default Huge ring bat

Hi-
I recently acquired the ring bat pictured below, and I was wondering if anyone might be able to help with some questions I have regarding it. It is about 4 feet tall and appears to have the rings placed similar to other 19th century or early 20th century ring bats. It is solid wood but it is not as heavy as it would appear.
I obtained this item from Josh Evans of Lelands at the April Wilmington show in a trade, and as usual it was a pleasure doing business with him. He could not remember exactly where he obtained it, nor did he know exactly what it was used for (his guess, like mine, is a store sign).
Has anyone seen something like this previously? Is it a store sign? Is it a carnival striker (strength tester)? Any idea the approximate age? Any additional information or even thoughts regarding this item would be greatly appreciated. I can also provide additional photos if needed.
Thanks in advance,
Alan Elefson

I'll take a shot at it, strickly a guess. I think you touched on it with the carnival link. Maybe a prop bat used in a clown act. As far as the weight, it looks like it may have been made out of willow which would be much lighter than other woods.

Thanks Bill! Any other thoughts and opinions are most welcome. I really appreciate the information about the willow composition as I was trying to figure out how it could be as light as it is while being solid wood.

Alan,

We all know, big mutha bats were humorously awarded to power hitters (Ruth, Gibson). Perhaps, this is the one that started it, long before.

An old photo or newsclip may pop up.
