Default Charity Auction - The Painted Turtle $6000! 20 mins left!

Posted By: barrysloate

Is your son's baseball team comprised of kids who could not afford to play baseball and would be forced to disband the team without some help?

Or are these well to do kids from the suburbs?

A little common sense would tell you whether or not it is appropriate. We could give the money to an investment banker so he could replace his worn out patio furniture, but that's not in the spirit of what the charity should be about.

Barry:

Then you really don't want the winner to choose. Sure, we are each individually putting some cards in but one guy is cutting a seemingly large check. So I guess you vote to make the decision for him/her. I'm OK with that, but I will guarantee you, if you leave it up to me and I win..it's going to my son's baseball team.

Cat--I disagree. I think the board should decide. I too hate the ACLU but I will go with whatever the Board decides.
I would like to make another suggestion--The Painted Turtle. It is a camp in California for children with serious illnesses. I believe it is associated with Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang. Also, Richard Masson's wife is on the board of this worthy charity so there is a direct tie to the Board.

I must admit I am mystified how an organization that upholds the Constitution of the United States can be the "enemy" while a terrorist organization such as Operation Rescue is considered a "great cause." ACLU by the way, represents on Constitutional issues both left and right of center.

So we know there is a level head deciding on the charitly I vote to go back to the originator of the idea. Who better than a level headed board member, that came up with the warm hearted idea, to pick? I would strongly encourage everyone to think about the heart that thought this up and let that person make the decision....I think Kyle has some good ideas.....that's my 1/2 cent......best regards

edited to say that I would be very comfortable with Jay M's suggestion also...it's hard to imagine a more worthy cause...

Yeah right--the ACLU is a secular left-wing organization. If you believe the ACLU is in the middlethen you believe that Dennis the Menace Kucinich is in the middle.

The charity will be either of two kids ones I previously posted, or something involving feeding the hungry, or the Painted Turtle one. If you don't approve, oh well, I guess I can't please everyone... but I know some kids will be pretty happy in the end.

Let's talk more about what you're donating or that you're even donating, okay? I just received an email from an incredibly generous board member who is sending me over approximately $800 worth of cards for the auction, and its only 7 items. Awesome, just awesome.

Thanks everyone.

Jay,

We agree on the ACLU but proceeds from Paul Newman's salad dressing all go to left-wing causes--you should see the list. Anything associated with Newman or Jane Fonda I would be strongly against.

Let's all be nice and leave politics out of this.

I like Jay's idea a lot, and think that Kyle will also pick a good cause. I say let's go with one of those two choices to keep things simple, or we will be here all night.

Here's a sample of what's being sent to me already:

1921 Exhibit, 1933 Goudey, 1915 Cracker Jack, N172 Old Judge, T206 and many more. Over $1000 in declared value so far. Pretty awesome.

This is going to be a great lot to purchase.

Kyle, I found a few more items to throw in the pot today that I will be adding when I get it sent out to you.

I like the Painted Turtle idea also....having Richard Masson's wife on the board will assure us that the money goes straight to the children.

Hopefully this is okay with Leon, but for the next week or so, in order to keep this thread near the top, I'll frequently add a semi update of what's being donated. The detailed list will come out once I send the monsterous package to REA.

So far we've got cards from:
Exhibit, Goudey, N172 Old Judge, E91 Am. Caramel, E145 Cracker Jack, E93 Standard Caramel, T206, T210 Series 7 and 8, E96, E90, T212 and 1951 Bowman.

Estimated declared value for the 15 "items" from the five amazing board members who have emailed their specific contributions is nearing the $2000.00 mark.

Pretty amazing folks.

It may also be a good idea to every now and then update and list what you have coming to everyone. I for one may still have another thing or two I'll end up sending in the next couple days.

I am hesitant to list all the items because I don't want people to feel like they do have to contribute more. If those who have already contributed are okay with it, then I will post a list every morning or so.

Thanks,

Oh no way I'd list who gave what... just the items if anything. I was planning on doing it in a few weeks once the deadline passes, but can do it sooner too.

I'll wait to see what people say today and then if I am going to list the items, will do so tomorrow morning.

Thanks,
Kyle

i think listing who gave what is a bad idea. Initially the discussion involved donating Approx $15-20 cards...and this is what I sent. Then all of a sudden people start donating $100 cards. Based on certain board members propensity towards class segregation...I think listing who gave what cards will only cause more problems and in-fighting.

Peter...no I wasn't wanting any list of what certain people donated either. I also jsut sent a $20 item....my thoughts were more based on sending something else (small). Most of what I have are common type cards..T206's. I just didn't see a need in duplicating anything already donated.

I see nothing wrong with a list of the items only. I agree with Dave about the duplication of items.
I would truely hope that "class segregation" would be left at home on this occassion. This is a charitable event, not a popularity contest. My hat is off to everyone that donates regardless of dollar value!

Unless I receive an email from atleast one donor who would prefer no list of CARDS only be posted, then tomorrow I will provide a list of donations that I have been emailed about. Again, no names will be posted of any of the donorations corresponding to their donations.

Thanks again everyone!

Keeping the thread on the front page atleast for this week. Received four packages yesterday, and know more are on the way. Please send your items in soon. Once my emailed list is full, I will debate sending the package to REA early. SO if you haven't emailed me with what you're sending, please do so... otherwise your item(s) may be returned to you if I am unable to forward to REA.

Thanks,

Agreed, Barry. Instead of just blathering on about the Right Way, Kopp took matters into his own hand -- and saved countless millions!

Runner-up charity organization: Ted Haggard Charity for the Re-Education of Homosexuals. Again, this is a very worthwhile charity that seeks to eliminate the bad behavior of homosexuality through a 20 day, intensive counseling program. A lifetime of closeted homosexual behavior can simply be ELIMINATED with deep prayer -- but they need money to keep it going. Only PSA 8 charity slabs will do.

Clearly, these organizations will do more for the greater good then, let's say, that silly cancer research.

As a very longtime forum member who just barely read this thread, I would like to suggest a very worthwhile, and COMPLETELY neutral Charity idea for at least some serious consideration.

The High School in my hometown of Middleton Idaho was completely destroyed by fire last week. It made the National news for a day or so, but the scene is horrible and looks like the aftermath of 911. There are over 600 high school students with no books, no musical instruments, no teachers files, no gym equipment, nothing. They are now seperating up the kids to go to different churches and charity organizations while the town figures out something to do. People all over our community (15 miles from Boise Idaho) are trying to put together dinners and yardsales to help the kids out, but the need is extremely pressing to get these kids books and the basics to get back to normal. The band and orchestra for the school had all their instruments destroyed and most of the parents can not afford to buy new ones, and the school can not pay for it.

I am sure we could make a very significant difference to in a real way rather than donating money to a mega-charity where the money will be used well, but the results never seen. I would be willing to bet anything that the school would honor the donation in a way that would bring some positive attention to the forum and the hobby to people who may have never heard of it before.

If this is something you guys are not interested in supporting for a charity idea, I will respect that. But I cant think of anything more neutral in ideology than a public school in absolutely desperate need of charity.

Rhys--I think we have already agreed upon a charity--the Painted Turtle. The posts by Jeff and Barry were just kidding around.
