Default for those of you that wore the "tools of ignorance" from L.L.. on up, the 1964 set.

for all of you that caught from little leauge and up....i present the wonderful 1964 topps set...topps did a great job that year representing the player behind the dish!! give the topps photographer his "props" for making just about all of them in the set take a "squat", .....being a former catcher myself i can apprerciate, oh the knee's..........the angel's even had 2 backstop's on one card...very cool.....now for the ironic.....the best of the whole bunch is holding a bat over his shoulder.....go figure.....you only get one guess at who it is....:hint:-"when you come to a fork in the road take it".

the 64 set is tide for my 60's favorite along with the 1967 set. great card stock and the borders stay white for the most part, topps did a good job trying to match the color of the team's uniform with the team name on top and the strip on the bottom with the player's name and pos. all of the dodger's cards are a pleasure to look at.........my favorite card in the whole set is non other than ...smoky burgess..(pictured)...and a close second the sandy koufax.....i had a great time putting this set together.

key cards of the set- of course mantle, also a second year rose, and the usual h.o.f. bunch from the 60's..
no real tough cards, but there is a hi # run like most last series cards of topps that will run ya more.
the backs are light orange with good stats and very clear.

any former catcher's that now collect??? please take a look at this great set with great card's of catcher's.

edited to add: it does say mangr. on yogi's card, but i hope many will get the point. was yogi player mngr that year???

I always thought Johnny Edwards...whenever I saw this card...looked like he had a mean hangover when Topps took this shot....like he was about ready to throw up his hotel breakfast...
Cool cards...I loved collecting (and upgrading)the 64 set,as well. (sold it a while ago)
My absolute post war faves were this set ,the 57 set and the 67 set. Just try getting all those 67 high numbers raw in NM or better condition!

Marty great thread. I too am a former catcher. To answer your question Berra was not a player manager in 64 for the Yanks. He was just the Manager. However, the following year (65)he was a player coach for the Mets getting a few atbats.

very neat display of the catchers' cards...
I never caught while playing, I don't collect the set, and I don't know the answers to your questions above, but thanks for sharing. It is one of my favorite Topps years from the 60s, and my focus (aside from the Cubs) is the Combo cards. This year has some great ones, including the Tops in the NL (Aaron/Mays), and the AL Bombers (Cash, Kalin, Mantle, Maris)...great stuff all around!

I'm a big fan of catching photos and I also like the '64 set, but I came up with a different answer to the trivia question. When I thought about the best catcher in the set, and how he is holding a bat, I immediately thought of Elston Howard. Although few contemporary fans in baseball realize it, Howard was baseball's best catcher when the '64 set came out. In fact, he was the A.L.'s reigning MVP ...

ok chris i'll bite!! analytically speaking yes, ellie howard for "1964", but i did say the best of the bunch, not the best of 1964!! i'll take a stab but i think i may be correct that yogi was better than ellie...."geez".it's a fun post chris not a debate post, but thanks anyhow..

Great thread. I played catcher in little league, in 1964 no less. Even remember making a trip to Disneyland with my team, and in uniform and being on a videocam to NY World's Fair in 1964 with another little leaguer (Bell Labs to Bell Labs displays)

I always thought the Burgess card looked like a Norman Rockwell painting for some reason.
