Default S.F. Hess Cards on Ebay

Posted By: Jay Miller

There are about ten S,F. Hess cards newly listed on ebay. All are creole except for one which is a scarce California League photographic card. Is it me or do these cards not pass the smell test? I know it is tough to tell with the poor scans but something still doesn't look right.

What's wrong with the scans. They are oversized and look very clear to me. I've only had very limited exposure to those cards so I can't really make a valid comment one way or the other. If they are fakes, they put a lot work into the pasting/back and album removal damage aspect of the cards.

Macrae would be the person to ask.

These are very vibrant cards. They look washed out to me. Maybe it's my system. I'll look again when I get home.

genuine to me too....albeit quite poor condition since it's only the top layer of paper basically left. Hard to tell unless they're in your hands, but they do look decent. Seller is in Los Angeles.....don't know for sure though. Wish the person would have done a better job getting them out of the vintage album..........

A long conversation with Tbob this morning abou them. I believe they are real although do agree they look a little "washed out"...the one I have "Levy"- the only Jewish player in the set, does have much more vibrant colors......without seeing them in person I do believe they are beat up and real though...and the seller is a good seller.....regards all

Default S.F. Hess Cards on Ebay

Hey Folks,
One thing about these that I didn't think about on my initial response is that there are "cut outs" of these cards too. These cut outs look exactly like the real thing but are not and were cut from posters. In my opinion, and limited experience, they are worth considerably less than the real cards....sort of like the Buchners and to a lesser degree the Allen and Ginter N28's.....I don't know if the one's on ebay are cut outs or the real thing but I thought I better throw that out there. I know of a group of the cut outs that did not sell for a while ( don't know if they have yet) and I was not interested in them.....again, not sure about these on ebay one way or the other...If I were bidding I would get a money back guarantee....best regards

The N338-1 from the same seller looks very nice, with great picture contrast, which is not very common on this set.

I doubt the N321's are cuts.

Like I said in my first post I believe they are real. They just don't look as bright as some others I have seen AND there are cut outs of this set. I would need to see them in person to have a better idea though.....best regards

It was my computer at work. They looked fine when I got home. What happened to the photographic card?

In David Rudd's "The Illustrated History of Baseball Cards Vol.1" on page 109, it shows a picture of 15 of the cutout N321 cards, and says they are printed on thin paper stock. The cards in this picture have some of the same characteristics of the cards on eBay with the corners missing, uneven borders, etc. The reason I think these 2 groups of cards (Rudd's book, eBay) are both cards cut from posters is because some of the vintage posters/albums had a design that overlaped some of the cards slightly in the corners, thus explaining why some of the cards have corners that are cut off (ie. the Mullee on eBay). This is just a guess, but I have seen it in some of the tobacco premium albums (N28, N29) where that cards slightly overlaped and when cut out would not have complete borders/corners. Does anyone have a picture of SF Hess N321 poster? Do the card pictures on poster overlap at all?

to Leon, or anyone elso who owns a N321,
Are the N321 cards normally printed on a thick stock like the N284 Buchners or N172 OJs?? Or is the stock normally thinner?

Frank
