SGC holder....leaking...
Posted By: Dave F
I have a card that a couple nights ago I had sprayed some windex on it to clean the slab up a bit...then noticed it had leaked through to the inside of the slab. I've never seen one do this before....anyone else had an issue like this? Could it be the slab is coming apart altogether? You can see it in the back scan, bottom right. |

Never seen that happen before. While the slabs are "sonically welded" (whatever that means) I dont believe they are intended to be water-tight. |

Josh...first for me also...but I didn't throw it in a tub...I had just shot a couple squirts of windex on the slab and wiped it off with a cloth...so it does make me wonder if it is coming apart altogether. Obviously with the card in the holder I'm not too worried that anybody would have switched the cards for a lower grade |

I see one of two possibilities. 1. You squirted some on the side that just happened to hit in the "right" spot; or 2. There is a hairline crack on the top of the slab near the raised edge and the liquid seeped through. I doubt the slab is coming apart. |

My old SGC Ruth had leaked when I advertantly left it on the kitchen counter, by the sink. I took the vacuum hose to the wet edge and was bble to remove the moisture. When you do it, keep the wet side down -sorry, that dint sound decent. |

I have not done extensive tests as Kevin has done however I buy huge collections every month, mostly of PSA and SGC graded material. Most cards seem to have been graded recently, and in most cases those are the representations made to me. With that said, SGC's seals are much stronger than PSA's and virtually all of the SGC holders I have broken open, and it is in the hundreds roughly every month, not only have excessive frosting but they end up breaking apart. The PSA holders don't crack like the SGC holders but do frost to a lesser degree than the SGC holders do. My sense is that the SGC holder has a much better seal than the PSA holder. |

After ruining a photo by spraying it with Windex which seeped behind the glass, I was advised by my local frame shop to spray the cloth instead in the future. [I felt pretty dopey.] I assume the same advice is appropriate for slabs. Mark |

Dave -- Windex is made with ammonia, and you now have an e98 (an issue that is subject to flaking) sitting in a semi-sealed ammonia rich "environment". Not sure if the ammonia itself can evaporate with temperature changes, etc., but if it does, it will likely remain in the holder, and actually come into contact with the card. |

Oh thats just terrific PC! I may end up doing just that...and just sending it back in with some other raw E98's in a few weeks to SGC. |

During my tests none of the major brands did well in the shotgun blast test or the chain saw test. During the testing phase where my dog was allowed to gnaw on the slabs, my dog seemed to prefer the taste of PSA slabs over the other brands. |

This thread brings up a good question about cleaning the holders. I know that some plastics don't handle Windex or other cleaners too well. Does anyone know for sure if PSA, SGC, Beckett or any of the other holders have issues with being cleaned with certain chemicals? I'm thinking that the grading companies would have taken this into consideration when selecting the materials for the holders. |
