I spent way more time than money at a shop in the mid 70s, because I only knew (what now seems like) a little about baseball, and essentially nothing about cards. And there were cards there. Pre-war cards, and lots of them.

But actually, what I bought there that started this quest for me was the dealer's old Sports Collectors Bible. He wanted the new one, and I got the old one real cheap. And boy, did that open my eyes. It gave me the big picture of what is out here, and a handle on costs.

I remember the Becketts in the early 80s too. No matter when it was, costs in relation to my available money remained high until the kids went out on their own. So although those are thought of as the real bargain years, I did not get much of that pie. Only the "must haves" (probably less than $500. worth by the mid 80s).

There is a set in the '75 SCB that I've often wondered about: F-111 Otto's Milk. Honus Wagner is the only card listed. I never came across an update, nor saw any of the cards from that set. And I don't even know when it was issued. - Wait, Im getting a bit off the track here.

Good Luck, Rich

Got a lot of good card store and antique shop pre-war items in the 60s, but they were not so much deals as they were the going price, or less, at that time. However, one that sticks out is the display for the machine that dispensed 1921 Exhibits. Cost me $5 . It's not in such good shape these days, but here's a scan of the top banner and most of the top two rows. It is actually 4 cards across and 4 cards down. At the bottom (not shown) would be mention that they cost 1 cent each. There's about 6-8 HOFers on it. Blank space is Sisler, which I still have.

*edited to say: purchased at a kitchy 50's-style deco store.

Around 1984 I purchased at a local card shop an uncut '61 Fleer Football sheet for $30. As I was about 11 years old at the time, I didn't quite know how to take care of it, and had it leaning against my bedroom wall, uncovered, for many years until I realized there were better ways to care for it. I still own it, albeit a little wavy due to my teenage years of poor caring of it.

It remains one of my favorite card shop purchases, not just for the extra value of it now, but for reminding me of my collecting habits in my pre-teen years. I'll post a pic when I get home later....

I think about what I DIDN'T buy.........back in early 1980's, all the times I went to shops to pick up wax packs or 1985 Topps Traded sets, all the while glancing at Cracker Jack Cards, T206's and MUCH more GREAT Stuff. Oh well, I do still have the 1985 Topps Traded set anyway..........

I remember seeing a 1952 Mantle in a shop circa 1982-3 and it was NRMT/MT and I think about $2-$3000 and thinking that's absolutely ABSURD!!!!

...from this forum, I made a trip to a card/comic store on the upper east side, where I found a binder full of T206 cards. I bought the below card raw for $35. When I went back a few months later, they were all gone. A buyer had basically purchased the whole album -- lots of cycle backs in there. Still, it is my best pre-war card purchase at a shop.
