This was the auction that was going to stop taking new bids at 4:00 pm and CUT OFF the extended bidding some time after 11:00 pm.

Here it is 2:38 am... and once again those of us on the East Coast are getting ruined for the next few days.

You guys on the Left Coast need to BID and BID NOW so they can cut this thing off ASAP.

And YES, I know that I have 20+ cards for sale in the auction and might lose a little money by closing the auction...

but so be it.

Compromise: Just close the items that I am selling and bidding on.

Personally, I think the houses should just institute a srop dead time, say midnight PST. Everyone should be home by that time and no one can complain that they didn't get a chance to hold out their bid until the last minute.

I'm not sure what the programming requirements are, but why can't they set up the auctions so that if there is no activity for 15 on a lot, that closes. That would save a whole lot of hearache.

Jay

I like to sit outside drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home I would be arrested, so I go to baseball games and fit right in.

I'm on the left coast, but also disappointed, Hal. I had hoped from Robert's auction rules and follow-up postings the auction would end around 11:00 PM PST at the absolute latest (and I was hoping for closer to 10:00). If you factor in the original 1:00 PM PST closing time for initial bids, the REA auction has had a whopping 10 hours of extended time and still going. That's actually way more than a typical Mastro or Lelands auction and basically asking bidders to stay on guard for an entire day. Not to mention the fact that despite promoting the opposite, it looks like this auction has turned into another battle of attrition over who can stay up the latest.

Between this and the basically nonfunctioning site (unbearably slow load times, and that's if you can even get the page to load, which I've been having trouble with since early this morning, which led me to give up on some lots), I think Rob needs to do some serious tinkering with his auction format and certainly his website needs a major overhaul.

While I think the world of REA and Robert Lifson, and I'm sure he's done staggering business today (which would account for the website debacle), I think today's event was a poor experience for most collectors if their experience has been anything like mine. I can't imagine consignors are going to be too happy either, knowing bids may have been left on the table because of frustration with the site's failures.

This basically comes down to ONE thing:

There are probably only TWO or THREE people bidding a combined $700,000 on TWO items: Fashion Course Ball and 1914 Ruth rookie card.

If they "cut off" the bidding all of a sudden...

then the "losers" of those items will not have time to go back and SPEND their $700,000 on other items...

which will cost the auction house 16% of $700,000 = $100,000+

Can't really blame Rob for not wanting that money to be lost.

----------------------------

BUT....There has GOT to be someway to do something to avoid this problem where TWO people can force 5,000 to stay awake all night.

Can't Rob give those people "ALTERNATE" max bids that ONLY get activated at the very end of the auction if they are the loser of the BIG items they are going after??

Can't there be some way to allow someone who obviously has the money and credit rating to spend $500,000 to say:

"If my $500,000 bid does NOT win the Fashoin Course Ball at the very end, I want the computer to immediately enter simaltaneous "Max Bids" of $50,000 on the T206 Plank and $100,000 on the T210 Joe Jackson and $150,000 on the full sheet of silks, etc."

Maybe the auction houses can do this for the 5 biggest items in their auctions and let the rest of us go to sleep!!!!!!!!

When are the callbacks exactly? For some things I registered for a "callback" on, I was actually outbid on several hours ago....does he do them at the very end?

This is why I actually favor Hunt's format. You reserve a phone line and wait for your calls. (I've bid on items with Hunt's at a wedding reception and a college basketball game via cell phone, so you don't have to be chained to the computer all day and/or night.) Everybody else interested in that particular lot is either in attendance or also on a phone line. Everybody bids against eachother and in a relatively brief amount of time, everyone has to lay out their "max" bid. And when the call is over you know you've either won or lost and item and how much it went for.

The whole call back system and 15 minute rule only acts to unnecessarily prolong the above while bidders pussyfoot around with each other.

Alternatively, as Jay suggest, a 15 minute rule on each individual item also makes a whole lotta sense. You only have to pay attention to, and concern yourself with, the items you are actually interested in.

Was hoping the Boston Store Jackson would get more...

but apparently it is NEVER too late for someone to come in and rescue me!

No, my "winning" bids are on some obscure items.

The T210 Joe Jackson card I wanted has clearly left this atmosphere.

The auction ended at 2:53 AM. We had intended to end a couple hours earlier but the system slowness we experienced cost bidders time, throwing the schedule off a couple of hours. We didn't want to close the auction when bids were flying in late, and the reason they were still flying in so late was due to the slowness of the system earlier. We made the best of the situation, making sure everyone that wanted to bid could get their bids in. This meant an extra couple of hours. We appreciate your understanding and thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Robert Edward Auctions

Tough loss for me (actually "us", with 3 of us pooling our efforts). I watched the Gypsy Queens closely while being the high bid for hours. Then at 2:50 am I received the Outbid notice. I didn't open and react to it within 3 minutes and the auction was shut down. I'm not angry, maybe we just weren't meant to win the cards but I'd love a chance to pick up the one card I was interested in.

Anyone from the board win lot number 88 or know who won lot 88? I'd love a chance to obtain the Jack Rowe card from it. Please contact me either here or personally. Long shot but I have to try.

you are a lucky man...my wife believes in sex for procreation; we have one kid...

I've always wondered about the controversy over gay marriage because the people who are against it also think homosexual activity is a sin. They should let the gays get married so they can not have sex like the rest of us

Joe G.

I had the EXACT same problem.

I went back and forth on an item... outbidding the other guy about 1 minute before the "end" of the auction every 15 minutes...

but of course those were all just "false" ends.

THEN...

at 2:52 when the clock tells me that I have 4:00 or so left in which to bid...

the auction closes and I NEVER got a chance to outbid the guy one last time.

I thought when they said that the auction could end at any time, I guess I thought that they would at least close it at the end of the current 15-minute period!!!

My bad.

----------------------------

Then again, maybe they made a deal with the BIG bidders like the one I proposed...

which is to say:

I know you have $500,000 to spend, but you are NOT going to win the Fashion Course ball... so if you want to immediately spend your $500,000 elsewhere then we will close the auction immediately.

If that is what they had to do to end the auction at 2:53 rather than 5:43 am, then I am OK with it!

Auction worked out great for me. I bid on one lot-the autographed Duffy Mayo-placed an up to bid and went to sleep at 1 AM. Woke up this morning and found out that I won it for alot less than my limit.

I finished 2nd on the AWH, I couldn't stay up any longer. I am sure Leon got it, I always seem to be his runner-up. Not a bad title to have, Leon's runner-up, I think I am proud of that accomplishment.

Adam--It's a neat card. However, the description was a little off. I have an Old Judge autographed by Connie Mack which is obviously an older card taht is autographed.

BTW, Hal did you win the Ruth first card?

Lot #163 - Delehanty and Nash n142 Duke Cabinets

I might have some extras in some of these lots. Please email with any interest/inquiries.

No, I stayed in with the Ruth for a long while...

but alas it was not meant to be.

I did win the N167 Ewing and the N167 Connor.

That gives me TWO of the Connors, so hopefully I can trade one for ANOTHER N167 HOF card...

and then I will have 3 of the 6 HOF in the set.

Now that I own the J. Wood cabinet team card with the REAL photographs that were used for the N167 drawings...

I really want to collect all 6 (if possible).

You asked.....it sold for $4700 on ebay when I put it on there.....and I had paid $6100 for it. What people don't realize sometimes is that there are losses as well as gains...so if I buy something for 3k and ask 5k-6k for it it's really just making up for other losses It's a great card and you will be happy with it. I sold it to finance my Lone Jack Comisky, otherwise he would still be in my collection....take care

I was the under bidder on that card and just did not have the guts to hit it again. Ran it up from 7500 with someone else. That was not the only lot that I lost out on. Very aggressive prices for the most part. Way to go Rob.

It must have been 3-4 years ago, so whatever this finally sold for wouldn't be as hot as some caramels in relative price increases..if ya know what I mean...this might have gone up about 2x but other issues have even more staggering growth.....I didn't want to spend all of my money on the TT Johnson when I know if I wait there might be another of them, albeit maybe not Johnson. I have seen 3-4 Texas Tommy - Johnson Type II's sold in the last few years though....and you could say that about the Kalamazoo too but I thought this was a special card. I have personally barely ever seen a card with that kind of registration. I hope it looks as good in person....and that's not to be taken any other way than light hearted but the clarity is amazing (am I gushing )....regards

quick question about the REA "extended bid time" thing, since i'm not real knowledgable about the auction system: i was under the impression that acutions got extended for 15 minutes, only if the bid increased? and they closed after 15 minutes of inactivity. is this correct? because lot #155 sat at $1800 from about 7 pm to 3 am.

Leon,
I agree with you 100% The picture on your phillies is so clear and has so much contrast. I'm jealous! That card was at the top of my "want" list in this auction ( besides the unobtainable Ruth and Jackson)
Based on what the Detroit card sold for in the 5/04 REA I didn't expect it to go as high as it did.

Ben: That was a great pick-up on the Pirates pocket mirror. I bid on it early on and it was one of about 50 items I was tracking over the course of the auction. Great looking piece and your high-bid was a good price.

Jim: Any luck finding that Tigers postcard?? I've still got a hole in my display waiting for it!

I got the 1929 Murderers Row Cubs pinback and the lot of 1914 World Series Programs. I also wanted to get the lot of 1912 World Series programs to keep the Giants version and sell the Red Sox version on E-Bay, but the bidding went to high for me.

Leon - I totally agree with you about the clarity of the image. That is mormally the number one criteria in my mind when it comes to these types of cards. That's why I am so happy that I ended up winning the Boston team card. I didn't really think I had a chance because I thought it would go for $8k to $10k, but needless to say I am very happy!

Congrats to all those who came away with good stuff.

Matt

I won lot 164..3 N300 Mayo HOF'ers and it was "close but no cigar" on a bunch of other lots.
Congrats to all the winners.
