While reading "A History of Baseball in the Deadball Era" (authored by net54's Mark Peavey!) I learned of an AL game in Beantown on Independence Day in 1905 between Cy Young of BOS and Rube Waddell of PHI. A few facts from the game:
- PHI won 4-2 in 20 innings.
- Both starting pitchers completed the game
- Both pitchers batted 9th (pre-DH era) in the lineup, going a combined 0-16
- Waddell allowed 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st, then threw 19 scoreless innings to finish the game
- This was game 2 of a double header. In game 1, Waddell got the W by getting the last 2 outs in the top of the 9th.

3 days later, on 2 days rest, both pitchers would face off again in a 10 inning game. Cy Young pitched another complete game, while Waddell was finished after 7 innings as Chief Bender threw the last 3 innings in PHI's 2-1 victory.

Is 20 innings the longest game in MLB history that featured just 2 pitchers?

Show your Youngs and Waddells!

I believe both pitchers went the distance in the longest game in ML history -- 26 innings. Joe Oeschger and Leon Cadore, I think.

Fantastic book, I would encourage members to pick up a copy.
No Waddell but here's Cy.
