Default Vote for up to 4 Pre-1950 Hall of Fame Candidates

I thought it would be interesting to see how N54ers would vote if you were on the selection committee. You can vote from zero up to four candidates. Any candidate who receives votes from 75% of the voters would be in the Hall. Choices are (in alphabetical order by last name): Bill Dahlen, John Donaldson, Bud Fowler, Vic Harris, Grant “Home Run” Johnson, Lefty O’Doul, Buck O’Neil, Dick “Cannonball” Redding, Allie Reynolds and George “Tubby” Scales.

Default interesting

Interesting early results so far. Buck O'Neil is a little over 75% with Bill Dahlen and Lefty O'Doul close behind. Please vote, if you haven't.

Wish there were some 19th century choices as well.

I am surprised that John Donaldson does not have more votes.

I'll admit to knowing very little about the stars from the Negro Leagues, but if the stats I read about Donaldson are accurate, it would seem that he would have gotten easily inducted during the special 2006 vote where *many* othe NL players were voted in.

17 new inductees were honored that year. Were they all better than Donaldson? Or at least more "famous"?

Do you have a link to that 39-second video clip of Donaldson?

Voted Dahlen from this abbreviated list.

I don't understand why Reynolds is even on the ballot. It certainly isn't a math argument that places him there.

Reynolds - 25.4 WAR (375th all time among P's), 2492 IP, 109 ERA+

Lopat - 32.1 WAR, 2439 IP, 116 ERA+

Raschi - 16.5 WAR, 1839 IP, 105 ERA+

Heck, we can even leave the exact same rotation:

Shawkey - 47 WAR, 2937 IP, 114 ERA+

Stottlemyre - 43.1 WAR, 2661 IP, 112 ERA+

Reynolds is just a bizarre choice. Are they just trying to shove any Yankee pitcher in the hall? Did they just pick him randomly from the 50's rotation?

Out of 10 players from 74 years of MLB baseball, 7 of which are taken up by Negro Leaguer's, this is one of the top 3 long-recognized-as-a-major-league-or-whatever-we-will-call-it-now-leagues players not in the Hall? I find it difficult to see how he could be chosen as one of the top 3 via any reasonable metric, only by being a nostalgic Yankees fan.

Gil Hodges is in the second poll I put up. He's there since his career is considered to be during the "Golden Age" of baseball by the Hall of Fame, rather than the pre-1950 time period. Please feel free to vote for him in the other poll!

I am a bit surprised Tip O'Neil didn't warrant consideration.

Default Results

So, here we are after 115 N54ers voted. No players received 75% of the vote or more. I guess it's hard to get 115 people to agree on anything, maybe that's why the Hall limits the voting to committees of 16. I just hate to think that someone can go into the Hall of Fame based on the positive opinions of just 12 people. In any event, here's where we are at:

1) O'Neil 67%
2) Dahlen 64%
3) O'Doul 55%

Very surprised at these results and the results from our Golden Era Poll

Based on that Net54forum voted no one into the HOF from either group.

Should be interesting to see what the real vote results are.

We shall see in a month
