Default What is your PSA number

I collect PSA graded T206's that are mostly graded 4 or 5. What is the average psa grade of your T206 collection?

Most of the collectors on Net54 do not collect T206s based on average PSA grades. Frankly, to suggest that you collect T206s based on an average PSA grade will only bring you criticism on here. The prior posters on this thread were just anticipating a lot of critical comments coming your way.

Maybe I asked the question wrong or maybe I am naive. Lol. Most collectors I would assume like to collect their cards in a specific grade like a 3, 4 or 5. I am a new T206 collector and I am not really sure what is wrong with that?

Many folks despise what the TPA's have done to the Hobby. The advent of the 'Set Registry' being right near the top of the list.

It's a fair question but will elicit some emotions from the 'buy the card, not the holder' crowd. For me, I tend to focus on acquiring cards in a similar range that you do (4-5), but prefer SGC. I don't collect T206s but you'll find board members collecting this set in everything from T206 beaters to high end (not to mention the freaks!). Cheers.

Seems like most people on here collect "graded" cards. Thanks for the answer. Hope you don't get any slack for it. Haha . Kidding people.

Laughing out loud.

The unfortunate thing is that there is another crowd, besides that one.

If pas gave negative grades, my collection would probably fall into that category.

Having said that, I don't really bother with grading. Not that I have anything against it, but when creased, tears, trimming, holes, writing and stains are pretty much pre-requisites for cards to enter your collection, you find that technical grades are the furthest thing from your mind. Hell, in my case, it doesn't even have to be a complete card, and often that's even preferred. For financial reasons, of course.

PSA meaning Prostate-Specific Antigen can be a marker for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer. A low PSA number is desirable, preferably less than 1.
Hope this helps..

You'd probably get better responses if you asked "Which condition range do you prefer to collect?" or something to that effect. I think most people on here have a general condition range that they mostly stick to, for a combination of aesthetic and monetary reasons. Your question (whether intentional or not) makes it sounds like you are more concerned about the type of case the card is in, and the number on the card, than the card itself.
My set is being built mostly raw, and in the FAIR to VG range.

Ray,

I personally collect T206 HOFers in PSA grade 4 only. I've occasionally purchased 4s in other TPG holders for tougher backs, but did cross each over to PSA. I'm sure some board members would cringe at the thought or find it silly, but hey...whatever works for you, right? You'll notice most of my BST sales fall into that category. I do this for three reasons.

First, I'm highly obsessive about organization and things being uniform. From work, to home, and now to card collecting. Having every card in the same grade is attractive to me. Whatever the reason, it is satisfying for me and makes collecting enjoyable...for me.

Second, it helps me pace myself in the hunt. If I have a smaller potential set of possible cards out there on the market that fit what I'm collecting, it makes the daily hunt a little more fun, much more challenging...and ultimately takes more time and spreads the bankroll out. Especially since I've started accumulating different backs, it's often months between acquisitions. When I started a few years ago, I was blowing out my "card allowance" literally in minutes each month because there are so many out there.

Third, I'm relatively new to the pre-war world. When I first started, I was buying all T206 and 1933 Goudey in different TPG grades and raw. Coming right in as a new collector and trying to keep all different TPG grades price scales across multiple sets and then throw in raw cards on top of it was simply too much. I found myself making mistakes and also missing out on good deals at times. Focusing on a small group of cards, within a certain set, within a certain grade has really helped me get a hang of the pricing market, making it more of a hobby and less of a job.

The great part about collecting is YOU define YOUR set, and there's tens of thousands of possible ways to go at it.

I think Luke hit it on the head. Asking what condition range would go over a lot better than asking what holder number everyone averages. You could go as far as asking what grade range and what tpg everyone prefers if you would like...I'm sure everyone will keep it civil

I collect mainly graded cards anywhere from GD to EX (for prewar) just depending on price and appeal. I'm perfectly fine buying my whole prewar collection in VG condition, but sometimes I'll see a card in EX condition and I just want it...anyone else have this problem too? I already owned a kleinow ny in an sgc 40 holder and it fit perfectly in my collection, but one day I was browsing eBay and saw one in an sgc 60 holder that was beautiful and it just made sense to grab it.

Anyway, I collect mainly SGC, PSA and sometimes Beckett for my prewar stuff. But it's the card that trumps all and not the holder for me.

Rayl, what sets are you collecting? Or what is your hobby interests?

Thanks for the detailed responses. That's all I was asking, what grades are being collected. Jeff, I am a highly organized and everything being uniform kind of person too. I like everything to match up nicely. I also agree that it keeps me paced in my collecting. The longer it takes, the better, and it will be more fun for me. It's pretty easy to pick up a bunch of raw commons with little or no effort with no grade in mind. Don't really see the point in that (sorry, don't mean to offend anyone).

I'm totally new to t206 collecting. As a kid I collected a lot of cards in the 80s and 90s but lost interest because there were so many types to collect. I recently became interested in T206 cards by reading and researching what was on this site. I actually came to know this site because I was interested in purchasing a 1928 Babe Ruth candy wrapper. I did a google search and this is where I landed. I was able to purchase a wrapper in an auction last year.

I do have to say I am hooked on collecting again. My other hobby is growing giant pumpkins. My biggest is 1,216 pounds. Not related to this site but that's what I do

I don't stick to a set grade. If I like the look and the price is right them I will pick it up. My set is mostly lower grade but decent eye appeal.

I collect cards with the best eye appeal that I can afford. I mostly buy raw cards and a numerical grade dosen't bother me as much as how a card presents. Since I have a low budget though most of my cards would fall in FR to VG range.

Ray, that pumpkin is insane! Thanks for sharing.
I have mixed feelings about TPGs. I think they are a necesary evil these days. However, I don't see anything wrong with a collector who likes the way a certain holder looks, or likes to see the same number on the flip. I have a bit of OCD that makes me want every card I own to be part of a set I'm working on. When I pick up a random card I like that isn't from a set I'm building, I almost always end up selling it because I feel like it doesn't belong. I imagine the guys that like to have the same numbers on their slabs have a little bit of the same OCD going as I do. Honestly, if I had a lot more money, and a few walls in my house to make a display case, I could see myself trying to put together the set in SGC 50-60. I prefer raw, mainly because it takes up less space, but a framed SGC set hanging on the wall would look pretty sweet.

Screw cards, lets talk pumpkins Ray, lol. but in all seriousness I collect raws and send some of them in to SGC simply because i like the black slab, most of my T206 fall in the 30-40 range right now, but I upgrade here and there.
And I usually do based on eye appeal not grade.

I don't have a set grade. I buy the most affordable copy I can find of anything I am looking for. If I have a choice between two in similar price ranges, I will go for the more attractive of the two. The common cards in my collection, if graded, would probably average a PSA 1-1.5 The rarer cards in the collection are probably closer to a 4. When the card rarely comes up for sale, I don't mind spending the extra to get it.

I have never sent a card in for grading. I think it would be nice to have everything in slabs, and all from the same company, but it would be an expensive endeavor to send them all in plus it would take a lot more space to store the collection that I just don't have.

I don't collect t206 per se though. I think I have maybe 3 or 4. The only one that is in a holder is an SGC Authentic. It is really moldy, and I cannot tell you how happy that it is sealed up in that holder for my protection and those around me.

I collect T206's in psa, sgc and bvg in the 4 to 6 range for my permanent collection. If its a special card, ie. an unusual back any grade will do. I'll also buy additional cards if I think it's a good deal or a lot as low as the 3 range.

Hahaha. Good one Mike. Thanks for all of the posts guys! Growing them is a lot of work actually but a ton of fun. Spend a good couple of hours a day in the patch. They are grown using all organic fertilizers. At their peak growth, they can put on 35lbs a day, no bull.

Now back to the T206s..... I definitely can see both sides of the conversation and appreciate everyone's style. Collecting this set will be a long ride for me and I look forward to hopefully buying / selling /trading with the great folks on this site.

Winning pumpkin is usually about 1600 lbs. Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, citing the expense, recently announced they are not doing the pumpkinfest anymore. Ray, the pumpkin in your picture looks competitive.

I collect T206 mostly ungraded and averaging G-VG.

Hi Mike,
I was referring to the reaction to the original post, not your comment on mine. No worries here.

Sorry if I offended, Jim. You quoted my later post, so you confused me

I like to lighten things up a bit and have some fun every once and a while and in this case the OP knew it was all in fun.

Anyway...nice pumpkin, ray!

From the reactions someone should do a set of giant pumpkin cards.

I collect the whole range of grades. Lately I've been a bit pickier and look for VG-VG/EX cards that look nice. But I won't pass up a good deal on a lower grade card if it's cheap enough or interesting in some other way.

I do send in some of the nicer ones to SGC. It's fun and for cards I've owned for years it's like buying them all over again.

I have them on the registry, also for fun. I know I can't view it as a competition. But I must confess to being a bit sad for a couple minutes when the Blankbacks brought the average under 50.
I have a few PSA cards,(maybe 4-5?) but the crossover special is a good one, so maybe not for much longer.

Default Psa t206

I have quite a few T206's, mostly graded. My near set of 520 different has a PSA grade average of 5.19. I've generally had a good experience with PSA but a lot of people like to bash them.

Ever heard of the Smashing Pumpkins?

Default What is your PSA number

This is my third post of the night (long time lurker) and I'm about to bare my soul to you. First of all, I live on the east coast but I've attended two pumpkin fests in Half Moon bay CA in my life time. Sounds weird, but check it out. More to the point, I've been collecting vintage cards for near 40 years, but just can't bring myself to submit any to grading. I think it's phobia. Anybody else suffer from this?

I have a friend that will not send cards in for grading because he is afraid he will not get the same cards back.

I saw my first giant pumpkin last fall in Maine. I could've fit in the pumpkin. It was insane. I don't know what the hell they feed those pumpkins?

My set is being built mostly raw, and in the FAIR to VG range.
So your suggesting that he put sugar on his question, to make it seem like the range from the TPG and the range he would assess the card are two totally different things? You basically said, what he asked in a reworded sentence, to eliminate inferred connotation which might spark some heated response.

I thought it was pretty obvious what the guy was asking.

I collect 5+ condition because that pretty much sums up what I am looking for in my collection. Looking for complete corners, nice centering and focus. I have had to pass on some 5s because they were really 4s with a gnawed on corner and I have some 5s that could be 7s.
